Judge T A Beard dismissed a 25000 damage suit by Ty Helgeland against Norman Hanson and others after a 21 hour jury deliberation. In Rockwell City 15 month old Paul Hanson drowned in a bucket of water while his mother was briefly away.
John Henke and Minnie Raynor as executors of Clem Henke’s estate paid 1862.03 in delinquent personal taxes on a 100 year old Akron man’s estate that reportedly included a hidden fortune of about 60000 dollars and some land. Of the total, 150.40 was interest, the sum calculated from net income over the last five years.
Sioux City Public Safety Commissioner Harold N. Sturgeon warned theater managers they may be arrested if they cannot keep bank night crowds off the streets. He said the likely charge is creating a fire hazard after visiting an outlying theater where about 2 000 persons packed the street awaiting the drawing.
Paul Anderson, an agent for Cor yell Oi Co, suffered serious burns in a fire and explosion at the firm’s bulk plant. Charles Dutton and his son Charles Jr. sustained lighter burns while trying to repair a faulty gasoline tank car pump. A spark of static electricity is believed to have ignited fumes.
Hastings. A 10 month old boy, son of Jack Hudson, a Hastings trucker, was found asleep in a wheat field on the William McKinney farm by searchers. Hudson is sought for questioning. Mrs. Gabe Everhart said Hudson took the child from her. Drs. said the baby was in good condition.
Cedar Rapids authorities investigated a dynamite blast at the Concrete Materials Co. quarry that shook dozens of east side homes but caused no reported damage. City attorney Don Hines said the blast complied with the ordinance on timing, not quantity of charge.
Sheriff Karl Gibson of Adams county says Arthur Hackett of Corning signed a written confession admitting break ins at the Corning postoffice. He is alleged to have stolen about 140 letters in three weeks. Hackett told Postal Inspector J. T. Nelson he did not find any money in the letters.
Dr. H J Thornton university history professor gave the graduation address to 102 graduates at a Warrington school commencement. 86 earned high school diplomas and 16 from the junior college as ceremonies in the Methodist church honored the two classes. Scholarships were announced for Mildred Anderson Marsh Atkinson and Fave Schoonover with a De Molay offer pending.
The Washington High School class of 1939 lists graduates including Phyllis June Ahrens Mildred Anderson John Robert Andreson Marsh G Atkinson Viva Maxine Baxter and many others. The ceremony features a ten highest honor group highlighted among the long list of names with senior achievements noted.
Two members of the graduating class achieved the highest grades in scholarship. The valedictory and salutatory speeches were delivered at class day exercises instead of the commencement program this year.
B O Rowndy owner of the Big Giant Super Market announces Keith Wells a Washington youth will manage the store opening next week in the former H A bakery building on West Second street. The store will be a complete food market with 100 percent local hire and a remodeled interior. Louis Baird finishes the front sign work.
Boston June 2 A son was born prematurely to Mrs Anne Clark Roosevelt daughter in law of the president She died shortly after birth The father is reported in good condition.
Des Moines reports state fire marshal John W. Strohm woke to two blows in the face and then, after being dazed, found a prowler in his room whom he kicked out the window.
The Methodist church daily vacation Bible school starts next Monday at 9 a.m. A strong enrollment is reported for a two week session with Bible study dramatics music hymns worship and organized play. Dr Arthur Atack announces Mrs E B Stateman as director and Leigh Soule as dean.
Police arrest a suspect who claimed to be William Quinn, 22, later identified by Strohm as the man who was in his room.
A campaign seeks post office addresses for all members of old Company D 60th Iowa Volunteer Infantry who served in the Spanish American War. Relatives or friends may know the whereabouts of comrades or death and burial dates for the permanent record. Contact Hugh H. McCleery in Washington Iowa.
The Summer Music School opens next Monday at the high school with free lessons in strings woodwind brass and percussion. Maurice Brayton announced 115 students already signed up and enrollments remain open.
An illustrated radiophoto shows the British submarine Thetis which sank and did not rise during a test dive off Birkenhead England. It lies in 22 fathoms of water with 73 aboard.
