Floyd Grecian proposes a high school band banquet with Home Bakery donating rolls and cupcakes for the event. The idea seeks community support and confirmation of timing.
Maurice Brayton directs a junior high band concert on the high school lawn drawing a sized crowd of parked cars and standing listeners. The hour long program features marches overtures and patriotic pieces showcasing a fine repertoire and bright future for the students.
A column notes a $56 000 fund for a new nurses home at Lutheran hospital was completed after a brief drive. The balance of $29 000 remains. Construction is to start soon as the fund was raised.
The largest class in West Waterloo High School history will receive diplomas at commencement on June 10. Principal W. W. Gibson announced 262 members in the graduating class.
Charles City report notes Fred Ehelebracht of Rudd, an implement dealer, takes no chances on burglars using force on his store safe. Thieves who took 2 pennies from the cash register found a tag tied to the knob on the safe containing the combination.
Mount Vernon commencement exercises at Cornell college honor 102 degree candidates. Yale divinity school former dean Dr. Charles I Brown will deliver the commencement address. The weekend program includes alumni day Saturday and baccalaureate day Sunday.
A pasture field day at the state hospital farm near here is led by Prof. H. D. Hughes of Iowa State College. The event reviews six years of pasture improvement work and demonstrates effects of different pasture treatments for public viewing.
Utah Snow a 17 year old with home in Jefferson Town worked on a farm near Washington. He took a watch from Everett Palmer’s pantry, then traded it with a Washington jeweler for a smaller one with officers’ help. He admitted the theft and said it was his first offense. a juvenile court hearing will be held before Judge P J Siegers.
William Glassburner returns to his Gary Indiana home after visiting Mrs. Etta Burner and J. C. Carris. He plans a two to three week stay before resuming his routine.
Dolores Russell, 4, daughter of Mr and Mrs Perry Russell, drowned in a pond on the Stanley Lamb farm. She swam from a diving board while two Lamb children were told to stay away. The body was recovered by Mrs Lamb after the incident. A doctor treated her for two hours.
Des Moines Attorney General John H. Mitchell rules primary voters may switch party affiliation at the polls on election day. The opinion cites Town law allowing an elector to request a ballot of a party other than their registration and to affirm party membership if challenged before election judges issue the ballot.
Representative Otha Wearin campaigned in Washington and Ottumwa urging Roosevelt supporters to unite for his senatorial bid. He stressed fighting for New Deal principles and predicted Iowa would endorse his candidacy in June. Georgia-like endorsements and speeches framed the race as a test of Roosevelt policy.
The State Department announced that Japanese authorities restored the property of the Southern Baptist Church in the Chapei district of Shanghai to the American mission. The seizure had lasted since last August after a stern protest by the United States government over the occupation. The consul-general in Shanghai confirmed the formal restoration.
Hong Kong dispatch reports heavy fighting along the Anhwei Honan provincial border as Japanese forces try to save Gen Doihara's 14th army from destruction. Japanese penetration exists with capture of Luyil city in the Lunghai railway area.

Sioux City police raid led by William J. Cullen and Fred Rhabottom yielded two barrels which were believed to contain whisky but proved to be water. They carried the bulky cargo up a narrow basement stairway and into a van before uncovering the empty contents at the liquor station.
President Roosevelt pressed Congress to rush the 4.247 billion spend-and-send relief bill, seeking broad emergency powers. In a letter to Senator Alva Adams, he warned unemployment has worsened since his prior relief message and urged immediate emergency employment projects for this summer and autumn.
Dr. Carl B. Seashore, dean emeritus of the graduate college, will deliver the commencement address to more than 1,000 University of Iowa graduates in Iowa City. Only three other men have earned the honor, all former faculty members. Weeks later, hundreds will arrive for summer school as 40 states send representatives to register for about 700 courses. The first term lasts eight weeks, ending August 5. Mr. and Mrs. George Zeck dined with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Goff northeast of town.

J Edgar Hoover arrived in Princeton Florida to personally oversee the search for five year old James Bailey Cash junior missing since Saturday night. A ten thousand dollar ransom was paid by the father as a large posse with six speed boats and 15 expert divers scoured the southern tip of Florida for clues. Two striped convict suits found four miles east of the kidnapping scene were deemed unlikely to be connected. Rain did not slow volunteers as three men a carpenter and his son and a former federal convict were questioned by federal agents.
Mrs. Julia M. Parker was found guilty of manslaughter for killing her former friend and real estate partner Edith Cummings in Detroit on June 2. The verdict centers on a dispute within their former business relationship and ends a high profile local case.
Washington dispatch reports within an hour of meeting with Rep D J Lewis veteran Maryland Democrat announced candidacy against Senator Millard Tydings in the September primary.
Plans are forged for a Washington playground to run with strong supervision this summer. Sufficient funds cover two months of activities and a third month may occur if more money is raised. Mrs Jacob DeKoning of Washington conducts a daily vacation Bible school at Pilotburg this week with Ruth McCauley and Margaret Vodicka assisting. About 20 children are enrolled. A program will be held Sunday evening at 7 30 in the Pilotburg church. Sunday school meets every Sunday at 10. Marton Stransky superintendent, Rev Jacob DeKoning missionary organized the Pilotburg school.
