Farm Bureau head calls for freer agriculture policy
Iowa Farm Bureau President J Merrill Anderson told about 300 county leaders at the mid year meeting that now is the time to move toward less government control. He praised the Curtis Bill as a starting step and warned without reform, margins and prices may be regulated. He outlined recourse loans up to 90 percent of market value and argued for phasing out price supports and acreage allotments while maintaining conservation programs. He noted studies suggesting dropping diversion programs could lift net farm income at lower cost to the government and urged USDA to focus on serving consumers.
