Clarence Everett Haifley 49 and his children Bonnie Jean 14 and Clarence Jr. 17 drown at Lake Darling State Park spillway after Bonnie Jean slips into the water. Billy Smithburg, who tried to help, escaped by climbing a tile as others alerted authorities. Funeral services set for Saturday at Sherman-Eden Funeral Home. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Four sail crewmen killed in Lake Erie ship blast
Four longshoremen died and five were injured when an explosion and chlorine gas release hit the hold of the Norwegian freighter Thorstream at the Port Authority Terminal on Lake Erie. The 479 foot vessel, en route from Chicago to Hamilton then Africa, was berthed with coast guard and city fire crews at the scene. The Sylvania disaster a day earlier is noted with no injuries to its crew.

Davenport man charged in holdup murder at tavern
