Fire at Lake Darling Burns Two Brighton Boys
Fire Friday destroyed a machine shed and workshop at the McEldoon residence near Lake Darling State Park. Mark McEldoon, 70 percent burned, and Todd McEldoon, severely burned, were hospitalized at University Hospitals Iowa City. Cause under investigation. Mrs McEldoon found burned phone wires as she sounded the alarm. Brighton and Richland fire departments fought the blaze near the family home.

Washington County Fair Opens With Weeklong Schedule
Preparations completed for the Washington County 4 H and FFA Fair opening Monday August 2 with weigh ins, livestock judging, and girl projects. The four day event runs through Thursday August 5 featuring tractor pulls, jazz bands, free skating, and a Jaycee Beauty Pageant Tuesday night. Admission details include $3 daily, 50 cents day shows, $1 evenings, and 1.25 for dances with free admission for children under 12. Special barbecue events and pork promotions are planned for Wednesday with samples and a whole hog barbecue.

Judge blocks defense fund used to pay Briney judgment
Mahaska County District Judge L R Carson ruled that money donated to defend Mr and Mrs Edward Briney in their plun case cannot be used to satisfy the $30 000 judgment. He overruled Marvin Katko of Eddyville who sought the funds as partial payment of the settlement. Katko injured in 1967 by a trap gun while prowling the Brineys vacant farm house.
