Cardinals and Pirates Ride Young Arms to NL Standings

The St Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates shifted into stronger contention in the National League as improved pitching steadied slumping stars. St Louis saw Ernie Broglio exit and Bob Gibson falter while Ray Washburn battled arm trouble, yet Don Schwall and Al McBean sparked a late surge for Pittsburgh. The Cardinals hold a six game winning streak and sit six games behind the Phillies, with Vernon Law contributing for the Pirates as they climbed to third place behind a string of complete games and stout relief. In other NL action, the Phillies edged the Giants in 10 innings, the Dodgers beat the Mets, and the Cubs defeated the Cardinals. American League results included Detroit, Baltimore, Cleveland, and Washington wins.

Spring bulbs and berry pruning tips for Iowa gardens

Plant fall bulb varieties in September and October to secure blooms next spring. Daffodils require early planting to establish roots before freezes. For black and purple raspberries, pinch new shoots to 36 to 48 inches weekly until early August, then prune old canes after harvest. Resume spraying for anthracnose and consider a green manure crop like rye in August to improve soil and reduce erosion.
