Thought for the Day on barbed wire and history
The editorial reflects on small things that threaten faith, then recounts how barbed wire transformed American history and shifted power from cattle barons to farmers. It traces how inventions, economics, geography, and culture shape nations, noting taste and trade as drivers of history. History is made by people and the darndest things.

The Missionary and the Drunk United Presbyterian Home
In Washington the writer shares a paradoxical bus stop experience on a trip from Columbus to Chicago. A Hindu student studying in the U S explains he has not heard of Christ in America though aware of missions in India. The tale contrasts faith with a drunken passenger named Happy, who causes disruption and prompts the student to question missionary teaching at home.

Declarer Play in Six Hearts After North Leads Diamonds
West is declarer in Six Hearts after North leads the ace of diamonds. Plan to establish the major by crossruff or ruffing finesse depending on discards, count the outstanding beauties, and optimize trump management. In practice, play diamonds to capture and time heart entries, then test the drop of opponent's guards to maximize length in hearts.
Declarer Play in Four Spades After Club Lead
In a Four Spades contract with West as the declarer, North leads the ten of clubs. You win with the jack or queen as appropriate, then South returns the queen of hearts. Plan to establish spades while managing heart and club tricks. Consider discarding losers on established suits and timing entries to your tabled cards.
Tactical bridge play for a compact slam in diamonds and clubs
The hand analysis discusses avoiding the spade finesse at trick three and handling heart and trump sequences to force a slam. It outlines ruffing diamonds, a low heart to the king, and potential lines if South or North reneges on opening hearts. If South ruffs, a return leads to the contract. if not, cashing king of diamonds and ace of hearts then four clubs may secure the contract.
