Max Clifford Rupe, 9, drowned after slipping into a pond near the Des Moines river Saturday afternoon. Firemen performed artificial respiration. He leaves father Thomas Rupe and mother Bernice McCoy, along with grandparents and three half sisters. Service set for 8:30 p.m. Tuesday near Ottumwa.
Walnut Woods near Des Moines and Ledges near Boone will reopen to the public starting Tuesday after flood damage prompted partial closures for weeks. Acting chief G L Ziemer of the Iowa conservation commission said both parks are not in first class condition but will be open to maximize summer use.
Sioux City Sheriff Ed ward Ekren seeks the driver of a car that struck and killed 3 year old Vicki Towns in Beresford South Dakota on a Saturday afternoon. The child played along a road near her grandparents home. The vehicle did not stop. Vicki Towns was the daughter of Ed Towns Jr. of Sioux City.
Cedar Rapids police officer Roy Walker 30 dived into the river early Sunday to rescue Agnes Anderle 37 who had left Mercy hospital and was seen wandering on a railroad bridge. She hung by fingertips, fell into the water, and called for help before he pulled her to safety downstream.
A birthday picnic ended in tragedy as a 21 year old woman Bernice Delong her 16 year old brother Donald Decker and family friend Frank Groves about 40 drowned in the Des Moines River near the Iowa Power and Light plant southeast of Des Moines. The bodies were identified as Bernice Delong of 312% FE Sixteenth St Donald Decker of 812% RB Sixteenth St and Frank Groves of 947 Ninth St.
West Chester July 31 Mrs Albert Ford learns from the Colorado Springs Red Cross that her husband 2nd Lt Albert S Ford has been missing in action over India since July 15 He served as a pilot with a combat cargo group of the Army Air Corps in the region for months His parents reside in Fairfield and she had been visiting West Chester with her parents when notified

London July 31 An estimated 8000 American war planes joined a two way strike on Axis Europe. US bombers hit Munich and targets in France and central Germany from the west, and refineries at Bucharest and Ploesti from the south. The 8th Air Force led the assault with about 2200 bombers, dropping 4300 tons of explosives.
