A July report by Iowa statistician Leslie M. Carl shows an eight percent rise in potential wealth for Town farmers due to higher agricultural prices. Nationally, farm product prices jumped and the overall index reached 76 percent of the pre war average as of July 15.
Results from the first round of the city golf tournament show ex champions Walt Wells and Les Eicher out after early matches. Albert Moorman won a peculiar contest against Althe Guy Knauss, beating him on the 19th hole after a high scoring medal round.
George Matlock of Washington, a CCC member in Iowa City, was injured in a Saturday evening crash that left five camp workers hurt. Matlock has broken ribs and bruises and may remain hospitalized two to three weeks, though his injuries are not considered serious. William Booch suffered a fractured skull. Other injured workers hailed from Maquoketa, Bellevue, Moulton, and the Des Moines driver.
Weather reached 96 degrees on Sunday and 95 on Saturday marking the month’s warmest spell. Forecaster expects cooler air and possible showers tonight and tomorrow easing the dry spell. Mr and Mrs Clarence Kleifer and daughters Elena and Doris with Andrew Peet vacation at Lake Okoboji.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cora Durst Burham 57 are set for Tuesday at 1 PM at L. A. Jones funeral home conducted by Rev. A A Wing with burial in Ottumwa. She died Sunday morning at her mother in law's home northwest of Washington after a lingering illness. Born November 22 1875 in Washington County she married A K E Burham March 15 1898. Survived by her mother and several brothers and sisters. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Funeral services for Mrs George Stumpf 69 died suddenly last Friday were held at Holy Trinity Church Richmond conducted by Father Van Wause Burial followed in Holy Trinity cemetery She was born in Richmond lived there all her life married 45 years ago to George Stump She was Katy West sister of Fred West of Washington leaves seven sons Fred Bert Harold Harry Guy Will Paul and Vera plus her husband The funeral drew one of the largest crowds pallbearers were William Koenig George Felin Joe Piper Frank Eagle William Lintz and John Bopp Knights of Columbus members attended
A series of crashes and mishaps in Iowa claimed six lives during the week end. Key Rasches, 60, of Sioux City, was struck by an engine while on a track spur near a packing plant. Ward Patterson, 19, of Bloomfield, drowned when a boat carrying 20 capsized on Lake Wapello. Mrs. Chester Lawson, 47, of Des Moines, died after a car left a ten foot bank near Hamlin. Gale Doane, 26, of Newton, died from a fractured skull near Tama. Donald Geise, 12, of Underwood, was killed when the car he rode in swerved off the road near Weston and overturned. Commonick Ligourt, 43, of Des Moines, died after being struck on a bridge in Des Moines.
The death of Rev. W. C. Allen was reported by his son Dr. Paul Allen of Cherokee. He served Washington for over a dozen years and helped build a new church. Funeral in Cherokee Tuesday, services in Washington Thursday at 2 30 conducted by Rev H G Patterson. Surviving widowed, sons Paul and Arthur. Foresters and Christian Mothers attended. Wayne Simmerman Jr. of Chicago visiting grandparents.
The Washington high school auditorium hosts the premiere of Flights for Freedom adapted from a novel by Ethel Hueston. Mrs. C. Williams wrote the play produced by Lawrence McKune with a cast including Alice Shelan xoski Roy Finch and Mary Pauls. Tickets at the door.
Washington milk dealers reported no definite price set yet for milk in the community after a Friday night meeting. Dairymen proposed a ten cent quart delivered to homes and will decide at today’s Ottumwa meeting. Delegates Emmett Hayes and Cliff Snyder represent Washington.
At a brief special meeting the Washington city council adopted the annual municipal tax ordinance for the next year. The total levy of 45420 dollars matches the budget proposal approved after a hearing held earlier, reflecting a sizable reduction under Beatty Bennett legislation.

Friends report Mrs. Harvey Young intends to return to Iowa soon and will stay with her daughter Mrs. Jack Tucker in Panora.
Early pledges total $2,300 with $1,400 still needed to reach a $3,700 goal for lake land. A campaign update and planning session will take place in the Y community room at 8 p.m. to finalize steps and progress.
Josephine and Henrietta Hull and Jacek Lytle arrived Saturday evening after driving from Minneapolis to bring Catharine Jane Hull home. Catharine Jane is currently on vacation from teaching at the University of Minnesota.
Peter Witting is taking his sister Mrs. Susan Augsburger of Tremont AL and niece Miss Anna Birky of Fisher AL on a short trip. They were to leave today but planned to return later, indicating a temporary absence rather than a long journey.
