A labor strike by Truck Drivers union No. 90 drivers helpers and warehousemen began in Des Moines after failed tire terms negotiations with about 20 furniture retailers. Business agent Leo Quinn of the A F L said as many as 125 workers may be involved with pickets halting deliveries.
Police raid ing and morals squad concentrates on gambling activity. A raid on the Arcade pool hall at 404 Fourth St led to the arrest of the proprietor and nine frequenters. Sixteen women were detained in recent days and given a week's continuance. Rosie Ray, 26, pleaded guilty to vagrancy and received four years in jail.
About 35 000 Iowa wheat growers will be contacted in August to offer insurance on the 1943 crop. State crop loan supervisor Lester Vos says the plan is a three year policy with potential rate reductions if the farmer becomes eligible. AAA committees run the program in counties but non AAA cooperators may also qualify.
Marion B. Rossell, a 36 year old farmer from near Lewis, was taken to Shenandoah to be arraigned before a United States Commissioner on charges of violating the selective service act. United States Marshal James J. Gillespie said Rossell had been sent a notice to report for induction.
The Surgeon General reports 42 of every 1 000 U S armed forces contracted venereal disease. Ralph Harmon of the FBI notes the issue at a Des Moines conference. Dr Regnar Sorenson of Iowa Health cautions that eradicating vice is impossible but prostitution control is needed for manpower conservation.
Prof H J Thornton of the University of Iowa will aid the federal part tion of estimates of cereal crop consumption in the nation. Thornton a history department faculty member and author of a history of the Quaker Oats company is recognized as an authority on oat production and consumption. Government involvement noted.
Washington hosted two day examinations and consultations for prospective Army Air Corps recruits led by Sergeant Paul Schleyer. More than 60 men from Iowa Illinois and Missouri shared in tests discussions and a film showing at Central Park and a rain interrupt cut the event short. Local Veterans of Foreign Wars backed by E R Burham and Cleo Shoem ittee called it a solid success with several named participants listed among those interviewed.
Washington residents not in the citizens defense corps can attend an eight o clock public meeting at the high school led by Ivan Norton to learn air raid and war emergency procedures. The five week defense course continues next week with high enrollment expected and many local workers, teachers, nurses, clergy, and oil company reps enrolled.
Late yesterday the sheriff received a message from Harold Soden district attorney at Lake Placid New York that expenses for returning Leda St John would not be paid. St John was arrested for grand larceny in connection with theft of a car. She came to the county with her brother Hubert St John his wife and two others. Her brother and one associate admitted desertion from the army and were taken to Rock Island arsenal. Their aunt Mrs Fuller formerly of Wellman now lives at Brighton and was returned there.
United Press reports violent electrical storms caused major damage in Waverly Cedar Falls and Waterloo. A sugar beet plant building in Waverly was destroyed by lightning with about 75000 dollars in losses. In Waterloo the Congregational Church suffered a 15000 dollar loss.
Lindon J. Murphy directs Norton Instructor to teach at the Iowa protection school in Ames on August 13 and 14. The Washington man, who attended the first Ames session, returns as an instructor to discuss municipal training and explosives and lead a Q and A discussion.
Extensive improvements at the Washington State Bank have begun with the front entrance closed to the public for a week to ten days. Access to the lobby will be through the south door during this period. The overhaul includes a central double doorway, a vestibule, removal of the old metal ceiling, redecorating of the lobby and banking rooms, new fluorescent lighting, Venetian blinds, and a modern ceiling. Completion is estimated at about 80 days with Earl Wood of Ainsworth as contractor.
Henry J. Kaiser testified before a Senate war-efforts committee that his west coast shipyards could be converted to produce giant cargo aircraft without reducing surface ship output. The veteran shipbuilder said any shipyard can switch to plane building without revamping and cited his penchant for doing things that can't be done.
Eight charred bodies were removed from the burning wreckage of a Northwest Airlines cargo plane at Wold Chamberlain field in Minneapolis. Unofficial reports cited three more presumed victims amid the smoldering crash site.
Washington county launches a scrap metal drive to reach a 1000 ton quota starting next Monday August 3. Five trucks with three men each will sweep rural Lime Creek township and then the county in a six week effort. Bridges Wassonville and Marek over the English river sold as salvage yielding 54 tons for war production. Herbert C. Plagman state salvage chairman attended the county meeting.
A Chinese military spokesman says Japan is in a desperate campaign to obtain war materials and food. He notes Japanese forces harvest scrap in occupied Chinese villages and push wheat production in the north to fuel the war effort.
In Chungking July 39 American fighters claimed to shoot down at least three and perhaps five Japanese bombers trying to strike the Hangyang strategic airdrome in southeastern Hunan province. General Stillwell’s headquarters said three were destroyed and two more were thought down.
Harry L. Hopkins, adviser to President Roosevelt, married New York social leader Mrs. Louis Gill Macy in a simple White House ceremony on the second floor study. Rev. Dr. Everett Russell Clinchy led the service with 16 guests, including the Roosevelts.
Colonel Percy A. Lainson of Council Bluffs, chief of staff of the Iowa State Guard, was appointed warden at the Fort Madison penitentiary by the Iowa board of control. He will assume August 1, filling the post vacated since June 6.
Census figures indicate about 135 million workweeks for men yearly in U S factories, enough to supply two new workweeks for every male.
Brigadier General Frank O D Hunter and Brigadier General Asa N Duncan arrived in Britain as part of the United States air force leadership. The army communiqué listed other arrivals including Brigadier General Candee and Major General W H Frank, amid talks of a European air offensive or invasion.
London reports RAF daylight strike after night bombing of Saarbrucken. Explosions rocked Calais and Boulogne on the coast for about a half hour before the fighters returned to base.
In Millis Massachusetts a funeral home posted a provocative sign reading Enlisted in the navy. No business wanted except with Hitler. His funeral must be conducted. The incident occurred as the business closed for the day and drew attention from locals.

Private Willard Jm Gray son of Mrs Doris L Gray has begun the airplane mechanics course at the Army Air Base Lincoln Nebraska upon graduation he will be rated a fully qualified airplane mechanic and assigned to a permanent Air Force squadron for active duty.
Washington D C July 3 A proposed manpower mobilization bill is being drafted following a study by Commissioner McNutt at the president’s request Secretary Stephen Early said no bill has been approved or will be until the study is fully investigated and those working on it can discuss it with the president.
