Robertson seeks fifth term as Washington County sheriff

Republican incumbent Donald R. Robertson, in office five years after replacing Charles Snyder, argues to continue as sheriff. Howells raise catfish at new market in Junction

Howells Fish Mart on highway 92 in Columbus Junction markets southern raised catfish. Joe and Willard Howell describe a pollution free system with 11,000 gallons of circulating water and 15 tanks. They stock from Mississippi and Arkansas and plan future species. Open hours are 9 to 6 on Saturday and 2 to 6 on Mon Wed Fri.

Washington youths aid Appalachia through Union College project

Sixteen Washington area high school students joined a United Methodist Church program in eastern Kentucky to rebuild homes and install wells and siding in hollows. Based at Union College in Barbourville, the interdenominational effort runs since 1970 with supervision by Rev. Glenn Evans.

Pork Producers turn out 5000 porkburgers for county events

Washington County Pork Producers and Porkettes in Kalona have been turning 15 hogs weekly into 5000 porkburgers using a Robert Rust ISU recipe. The burgers, 85 percent lean, will be given away at the Washington County Fair Aug 2 and showcased at local centennials and events. Officials highlighted pork promotion efforts and district activities, including district queen shabal and county fair tours.
