Erie Pa July 29 sixteen lost when the sand dredge George J Whalen sank west of Dunkirk New York in Lake Erie. Fifteen crew members and one woman drowned as cargo shifted. Six survivors were taken aboard the freighter Amherst Stone. Coast Guardsmen found no bodies. survivors reported a sudden windstorm and the dredge tipping bottom up before it disappeared.
