Chicago reports say U S railroads need at least 50 000 new freight cars to handle the grain harvest as storage and box car shortages bite. Major presidents met under the Association of American Railroads to plan steps, with possible recommendation to buy 50 000 to 100 000 cars.
One person suffered minor knee injuries in a late night intersection crash four miles south of Riverside. Esther Horak received the injury as Leonard Horak of Riverside and Mrs. Carl Havel of Ainsworth collided. Front end damage totaled $250 for Horak and $150 for Havel. The intersection was obscured by tall weeds, preventing drivers from spotting each other in time.
Arlington Daniels of Washington was sentenced to five stays in the county jail on intoxication charges after information was filed by the city police.
Rev Frank Galloway pastor of Kenwood Presbyterian in Cedar Rapids will preach at the United Presbyterian church morning service this Sunday. He previously lived in Living Lake community north of Washington and this marks his first visit in several years.
Rev Earl C Longfellow will preach the sermon at the union park service Sunday evening at 730. The subject is The Power of Silence. Dr William J Grossheim will preside. Rev J A Cochran will read scripture and offer the evening prayer. Special music by First Baptist choir directed by Mrs Paul Thayer with soloist Mrs William Hessel tine. In case of rain, service moves to First Baptist Church.

MacArthur warns the next days may decide the front as Soviets weigh UN boycott and U S draft and rearm costs rise toward 50 billion. Syngman Rhee declares confidence in victory.
General Lucius Clay appeals for nationwide support to fund a Europe radio network through the Committee for a Free Europe Inc. The drive targets September and aims to fund a 10 ton freedom bell to stand in western Berlin next October.
John Long aged 96 died Thursday evening in a Mt. Pleasant nursing home where he had resided. Funeral services are set for Saturday morning July 29 at Omer Hoskins funeral home with burial in Brighton cemetery. He was born January 19, 1854 and once ran a Brighton blacksmith shop. Survivors include daughter Mrs Cleveland Dayton of Ottumwa and sons Dr Ralph Long of Sutherland and Harold Long of Sheldorn Kansas. One son and one daughter preceded him in death.
Eighteen 4 H demonstration teams from Washington county girls clubs competed at the annual festival held Thursday at the Methodist church. Esher Whetstone judged the demonstrations and urged the girls to do their best. Four teams won blue ribbons, seven red, and six white. Cedar Clippers represented the county with Marjorie Gamon and Donna Cave and their project Sewing is Mean with a Dirty Machine.
Chairman Vinson announced the army will grow to about 634000, an increase of 240000, and spend about 1.65 billion dollars on tanks guns and weapons. The plan includes reserves and National Guardsmen and signals upcoming draft calls, though exact draft totals remain undisclosed.
Iowa's new draft quota stands at 60 men, up 516 from the prior 344. Adjutant General Charles Grahl announced the change after the Defense Department ordered 100,000 inductions in September and October. Local quotas will be revised and forwarded to draft boards soon.

The Air Force plans to grow from 48 to 58 groups next year and to 69 by January 1, 1953, adding 186,000 personnel to reach 684,000. Defense seeks monthly dependency allowances of 75 dollars for wives and 25 dollars per child.
Billie Lee Farrell age 25 son of Mr and Mrs Walter E Farrell found shot to death in a schoolyard near Eldon Iowa early today. Wapello county coroner said no inquest. He had brought a 22 caliber rifle for target practice. Funeral set for Monday at Shermans funeral home. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. He had served in the army and lived in Eldon with family. Survived by parents a brother and grandparents.
UPI reports military leaders expect the new draft call to boost voluntary enlistments. Defense asks Selective Service to provide 100000 men in September and October, plus 20000 from the July 10 call, all to join the army.
Street Commissioner Earl Little asks motorists to avoid parking on the square and one block surrounding it from midnight Friday to 6 am Saturday. The prohibition allows Washington street crews to clean the streets.
Arthur Gulbrandsen, 39, owes his life to an empty milk bottle after gas fumes in his garage. He threw the bottle through a window before collapsing, and his sister-in-law Irene Hummel heard the noise and rescued him.
