Iowa Fly Control Campaign Slipping In July
Iowa State College entomologist Harold Gunderson says the state’s fly control drive is lagging as warm damp weather and abundant breeding material boost fly numbers. Home and business sanitation laxities, infrequent chemical use, and DIY screen painting with DDT contribute, though DDT is not a repellent and effective only on contact. He urges regular cleaning of refuse, weekly garbage can washes, and spraying and painting screens every two weeks, with more frequent treatment in hot weather.
