Sioux City veteran Rollo H. Bergeson wins the Iowa Republican nomination for secretary of state after a tight convention fight. He defeats incumbent Wayne Ropes on the second ballot as several counties shift substantial blocks to Bergeson, with Clinton and Polk counties key in the decisive tally.
Jergeson, a three year deputy under Miller and navy veteran, carried all districts except the seventh Ropes home district and the sixth Ropes margin 194 152 in the sixth Bergeson won eight districts with 339 votes and margins over 172 in the escond The third district saw 228 198 for Bergeson the fourth 227 139 the first 231 185 and the fifth 188 119 Young Republicans hailed the win as support for younger leaders and World War II veterans Bergeson thanked the convention for recognizing active youth in the party Ropes 47 a World War I veteran serves his second term was previously unopposed two years ago and was defeated by Miller by over 47000 votes in the June primary
Delegates at the Des Moines convention adopt resolutions calling for gradual elimination of price controls, a veterans bonus paid when state legislature decides, and preservation of school facilities. Chicago July 27 The parents of 17 year old William Heirens say they believe he killed two women and a child after hearing him recount the crimes in jail. Defense attorney Mal Coghlan says Heirens will give a complete oral confession to State's Attorney Tuohy or assistant, with a written statement to be signed. Heirens has been indicted for the Degnan and Brown murders and has admitted the Ross killing. arraignment is set for Tuesday and the defense seeks more time to enter a plea.
The Salvation Army near its $3,000 county target reports $2,600 raised by noon with $1,474 from Washington city and $392.50 from the countryside. County Chairman John Owens notes two or three towns remain untold and expects the goal to be reached early next week. Residents are urged to mail gifts to Owens in Washington Iowa or give to him directly.
Ward's automotive report shows American and Canadian makers produced 87,260 units this week, a 1946 high and near 1941 weekly output. It marks the third straight week of record car and truck production, with last week at 90,395 and August projected to reach about 405,000 units. Wyoming is noted as 78 times Rhode Island in size.

Mrs. Louis Baird long time Washington resident died early today at Grand Junction Colorado. Her brother Charles Gilbert of Washington notified the family. She passed away at her daughter Mrs. Lester Brown’s home where she had lived for three years. The body will be brought to Washington for burial in Grove Cemetery. service time not yet announced.
A Joliet area jury investigating the April 25 Naperville wreck of two Burlington streamliners continued hearings to August 23. Witnesses included C. H. Atkins of Aurora, Edith J. Alden, and Anthony J. Bote, detailing the incident that killed 45 and injured over 75.
Frank Miles, Democratic candidate for governor, told delegates at the state judicial convention that the Republican party was silent on many major issues at the GOP convention yesterday. He chided Republicans for failing to face what he termed.
Mrs. W. I. Hill age 81 died early today in Mt. Pleasant where she had lived for years with care from her family. A former Washington resident she moved five years ago to be near two daughters and a son. Funeral at Cookes Funeral Home Mt. Pleasant 2:50 PM Monday with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. She was a Methodist and member of the Journals Three Quarter Century club. Surviving are three daughters and two sons including Mrs. Pearl Mann Iowa City Geege Burlingon Mrs Mae Caby and Lloyd Hill Mt. Pleasant.
Delegates will choose candidates and adopt resolutions this afternoon. Former justices Paul Richards of Red Oak and Richard Mitchell of Fort Dodge are prominently mentioned as candidates.
Washington reports House and Senate conferees clashed over terminal leave pay for veterans. The House demanded about 3 million dollars be paid in cash rather than as bonds as the White House proposed. The committees will reconvene after consulting Budget Bureau officials.
G. L. Cross of Riverside drove a gravel truck into a Rock Island freight car on the branch line near Riverside. He sustained a back injury and was taken to an Iowa City hospital. His truck was nearly demolished at the crossing near roads 218 and 22.

Price Administrator Paul A Porter said the OPA will keep prices as close as possible to June 30 levels within new legislation. He warned many prices must rise and called removing controls the big job for the coming year. A decontrol board may be named to lift price restrictions while the extension act lingers.
