Iowa May Lose Two Seats In Congress By Re-districting
Washington July 26. A census panel led by Representative Siegel of New York says the 1920 census could require expanding the House from 435 to about 500 to prevent loss of seats for ten states including Iowa Indiana and Missouri which would each lose two representatives. If kept at 435 the population per district would need increasing. Creating 65 or 66 new seats would be necessary to retain current representation. Debate grows between expansion and possible reduction to 300 members, with framing of the apportionment bill to begin after Congress reconvenes in December and aims for early 1921 passage.
