Senator Edward W. Brooke urges President Nixon to resign, saying Watergate and ongoing impeachment damage domestic policy. He argues national leadership is crippled and a resignation would spare the country further turmoil and party disarray.
Rev. Glenn W. Fuegen, longtime Davenport native and Catholic priest, has been named pastor of St. Frances Cabrini Church in Richland. He currently serves as chaplain at the motherhouse of the Sisters of Humility in Ottumwa and administrator of St. Mary Church in Eddyville. Fuegen, ordained June 3, 1967, has served in Davenport, Clinton, Iowa City and Ottumwa, and will assume duties August 1.
Des Moines radio host Jimmy Donald Davis known as Jim Davis on KIOA was arrested at the Holiday Inn South on charges of inciting or advising the unlawful killing of his wife Craig Beck said the arrest followed a lengthy BCI Des Moines police probe.
Zone 13 forecast calls for increasing rain tonight into Friday with a 40 percent chance. Lows tonight around 68 to 70 degrees and south winds 10 to 15 mph. Friday highs near the mid 80s.
Washington County Ambulance Service shifts from red cross insignia to blue Star of Life symbols as advised by the U S Department of Transportation. The emblems feature the Staff of Aesculapius in white at the center and echo a broader move for emergency medical care vehicles.

The second annual Festival of Talents debuts at the County Fair with 18 of 31 auditioned acts. Judges led by Bill Riley will host August 5, featuring diverse performers from the area including Scott Whittenberg and Mark Miller, Jane Moss, Jeff Schoonover, and many others.
Crane Co petitions for a temporary injunction in District Court to halt wildcat strikes by workers of its Washington plant affiliated with the International Molders and Allied Workers Union Local 159. The suit, filed Tuesday by Everett Meeker, alleges union‑led walkouts violated a no‑strike provision and seeks restraining orders, damages, and arbitration of disputes. Judge Harlan W. Bainter will hear the 9:30 a.m. Friday motion as negotiations continue with union leaders amid optimistic statements.
The Rev Duncan H Nichol will be installed as assistant pastor of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington on August 11. He and his wife Jean Christensen of North Platte Neb reside in Washington. The ordination was July 10 at the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe New York.
The Iowa Board of Regents voted 6 3 to let the University of Iowa serve alcoholic beverages in multiple campus buildings including the Iowa Memorial Union Hancher Auditorium and the Art Museum with wine and punches mainly at openings receptions and performances. Opponents warned of health and safety risks while supporters argued adults 18 and older should have access for visitors and campus events.
The Streets Department will start painting parking stalls and crosswalks on streets around the square and one block off each direction. Work begins at midnight Sunday July 28 and cars must be removed from these streets and off the square from midnight to 8 a.m. for one week. Washington police will contact owners to move vehicles. City crews have been busy with lines and stop signs at Washington schools. Planned work includes N Iowa Ave from 11th to 17th Sts and sections of 15th St, 4th and 6th Aves, and 2nd Ave, with southeast Washington projects on Harrison and Tyler Sts and 12th Ave to start soon.
An audit by State Auditor Lloyd Smith shows 138 Iowa public schools had teachers teaching without DPI registration as of January 28 1974. The 85 page report covered 239 schools with at least one uncertified instructor, highlighting gaps in official certification and registration.
The Notables quartet from Muscatine will appear Thursday evening at the Washington County Fair on August 8. The group, known for entertainment and comedy, has traveled 25 000 miles in five years performing at fairs hospitals and clubs. Members include Max Collins on second tenor Austin Cole first tenor Devere Newberry paritone Maurie Reed bass and accompanist Lucille Carver.
