Miles Men Arrive Near Porto Rico in Mature Phase of Cuban War

Washington reports from the war department that General Miles has reached the Porto Rico coast near the expedition rendezvous and may land if Spanish forces are weak. Shafter notes Santiago troops improving and 11 000 Spanish prisoners fed while questions swirl over the Garcia letter. Scovel’s breach leads to expulsion. three other correspondents deported for inflammatory posters. The army defends rations and stresses unity with Cuban authorities.

Race War Flares in Monroe City Violence and Arson Report

July 25 dispatches describe a second clash in Monroe City between twenty black residents and thirty white locals. Embezzler Warner Captured After Bank Heist Spree

Warner, president of the Hallipshire County National Bank and treasurer of the Trampehire Savings Bank in Northampton, Massachusetts, was arrested in Louisville after a $610,000 embezzlement spree. He admitted the thefts and said he planned to return to Massachusetts without warrants, while authorities held a $1,000 reward for his capture.

Ex-president Warner to face embezzlement charges in Northampton

Northampton July 2 Warner ex president of the Hampshire National Bank and treasurer of Hampshire Savings Bank, a defaulter in both, was arrested in Louisville and will be brought back to answer embezzlement charges. He defrauded about 640 600, overstating assets and understating liabilities. He fled April 26 and has been in the west. He will be heard in district court and held for the superior court next month.
