Chicago reports hog prices reaching postwar peak levels with 45 to 50 percent above OPA ceilings. Midwestern markets see hogs mainly 25 to 75 cents higher. good to choice hogs weighing 170 to 300 pounds sell from 21 to 22.50 per hundredweight amid cattle price rises as well.
New York reports wholesale food prices held steady at a 26 year high after a brief advance following the June 30 lift of OPA controls. Don and Bradstreet says the index stayed at $5.20, with declines in flour and grains and increases in lard cheese coffee and hogs, while several staples fell.
Chicago July 24. The Order of Railway Conductors ordered a nationwide strike starting August 7 against the Pullman Company over war-time pay increases. The walkout would halt Pullman sleeping and chair car service on most lines, crippling Milwaukee Road’s partial sleep car operations and affecting railroading nationwide.
Northwestern Bell Telephone sues Keith Farrier in Brighton for 66.58 dollars claiming a July 8, 1945 crash six miles east of Washington caused the destruction of telephone pole 2446. Des Moines firm Parrish Guthrie Calflesh & O'Brien represents the plaintiff.

Chinese government sources say seven U.S. Marines kidnapped July 18 near Chinwan tao were released by Chinese communists and handed to a special team from executive headquarters. No Marine HQ confirmation yet. Spokesman says withdrawal of American forces from China was a demanded condition for release and that further discussion was planned.

In Minneapolis on July 24 Betty Andret from St. Paul led a dramatic play as she leaped to grab a fly ball, her glove snagging the ball before it hit a hawk with a 23 inch wingspread in flight. The third dropped dead at her feet.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Dr. Fred E Miller. Pallbearers named were Howard McCall Glenn McCall Al Huber Earl Smith Harlan Loughlin and George Breitenbach. Burial followed at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Washington county delegates to the state Republican convention plan to attend a district caucus at 9:50 p m and an eight o'clock caucus at the Kirkwood hotel. The district caucus begins at ten o'clock Friday morning with 27 delegates from Washington county and a committee man and woman to be chosen. Wayne Ropes, current secretary of state, is favored to succeed the late Karl G Miller as the party candidate for that office.
Soviet delegate Andrei Gromyko disclosed that the government rejected virtually all American proposals to the United Nations for control of atomic energy. He specifically turned down memorandum No 3 proposing an atomic development authority independent of the Security Council.
