President Hoover in the White House East Room hails the Kellogg peace pact as a landmark anti war treaty. Japanese ambassador Debuchi deposited the ratification at the State Department, completing the signatories and bringing the pact into force. Hoover calls for world unity under the pact.
Former president Calvin Coolidge arrives in Washington as a private citizen, greeted by White House aides and Secret Service. He wears a blue business suit and a braced left wrist, citing a fishing injury, and attends the unveiling of the general pact for the renunciation of war with an official luncheon.
In Teheran a clash between government troops and rebels, aided by the Lur tribe, left about one thousand soldiers dead. The report comes as authorities confirm further unrest in the region. Separately, Anna Hilla of St. Louis traveled to Muscatine after visiting Mrs. Laura Graham in Washington.
Senator Brookhart outlined two key changes to the tariff bill to aid farmers. He would insert a debenture plan payable to the federal farm board and back a 5 per cent tax on speculative stock sales, arguing the measures raise revenue and support agriculture without broad levies. He noted partisan support from Senator Carter Glass and predicted Senate revisions to the House bill. He and his family traveled from Washington after Yellowstone visits and planned joint debates on the debenture issue on an eastern chautauqua circuit.
St Louis pilots Dale Jackson and Forrest O Brine on the St Louis Robin pushed their endurance flight to 271 hours at 2 17 p m amid fanfare and telegrams. They planned to beat the 274 43 refueling record, reaching 264 hours by 7 17 a m today as praise poured in from industry figures and rival aviators.
In Teheran 29 people died and two villages were destroyed as Khorasan province endures ongoing quakes since May. Kuchan town and nearby areas evacuated amid intermittent shocks. In Mendoza province Argentina a violent quake killed a woman, with death attributed to fright.
An intense earthquake struck Iceland last evening, breaking seismograph equipment. Several houses were damaged but no casualties were reported, with widespread damage feared along the south coast near Mount Hekla.
One of the hottest days of the current summer yesterday was followed by a torrid night and then rain this morning bringing relief from the heat. Yesterday's maximum temperature was 90 degrees, near the yearly high. Todays drizzle persisted through the forenoon.
Rain this morning ended the heat wave in parts of Iowa. Des Moines and Ames saw cooler weather after a morning shower. Ames reported 2.4 inches of rain in six hours causing street flooding. Atlantic received 1.28 inches. Seven towns posted highs from 92 to 96 with Forest City at 65 the prior night.
Senator Smith W Brookhart, chairman of the senate committee probing alleged Texas corruption, reviews a 600-page report on Texas conditions from Fred W Strong of Fort Worth. Strang, who delivered the report, would not discuss its contents beyond noting it concerns the investigation.
Steorge Dowell, formerly conductor on Rock Island Nos. 429 and 430, now begins as conductor on Nos. 49 and 50 from Oskaloosa to Rock Island. D. W. Dayton remains conductor and Warren Glascock stays brakeman on the Washington to Oskaloosa mixed train, with layovers in Washington.
Melba McAvoy daughter of Mr and Mrs W H McAvoy of Washington won a preliminary round in the tri state amateur contest at the Palace theatre Burlington showcasing an acrobatic dancing act. Two more nights of Burlington and Illinois talent remain with three chosen from each night for finals on August 2.
The Rock Island lines operate a motor bus between Burlington and Cedar Rapids replacing No. 67 northbound and No. 66 southbound for a two week trial. The bus handles mail, passengers, and baggage and arrives at the junction daily at 2 07 p m and 4 25 p m with the experiment lasting into the colder weather.
Secretary of War Good announces a board of army officers to examine the entire army program. The aim is to eliminate obsolete branches and activities and present economy measures for fiscal year 1931. Proposals include delaying aviation and housing bill funding, possible abolition of cavalry and coast artillery, and closing small interior forts.
Miss Mary Manley age 77 died at eight this morning at the family home just east of Columbus City after a year of declining health. She was a daughter of pioneers James and the late [unnamed] Manley, one of seven siblings. Surviving are her brother Albert Manley and two nieces. Funeral services will be held at the home with burial in Columbus City cemetery. time unavailable.
The junior college reports strong interest and a hopeful outlook for many fall openings in Washington area businesses for students. Dean Harland Mead urges local business and professionals to notify him of job opportunities to help students meet expenses.
Des Moines reports that barley and early oats are mostly cut with ideal weather. Late oats harvest begins in central counties and is nearly done in the south. Red rust appears in many fields due to calm foggy mornings and late hay cuttings progress well. Corn tasseling and silk development advance while truck crops and gardens show unusually good condition.
J. F. Johnson, arrested last Sunday in an altercation with A. J. Luce, a grading foreman, pleaded guilty to assault and battery before Justice Barber. He paid $120.50 total including costs and was released from the county jail. Both men belonged to the McCarthy Improvement Company road gang working east of town.
Rome readers anticipate a monumental event as Pope Pius XI leaves the Vatican for the first time since 1870. The ceremony in St. Peter's Square will eclipse the Italy Holy See concordat in historical significance. Due to heat, the appearance is planned for about 7 PM with ceremonial pomp.
It is likely that arrangements can be made within a few weeks and if a number of positions can be found for local students the enrollment will likely be much larger.
Reports from Moscow Tokyo and London describe Russian mobilization along the Manchurian border despite Moscow and Nanking assurances of peace. Chinese and Russian forces clash near Manchuli with refugees fleeing as armored trains appear and trench fortifications rise north of the city.
County Superintendent Mrs Winnie Palmer announced the annual teachers institute will be held Monday and Tuesday September 9 and 10 at Washington high school. Schools in the county will be dismissed both days. Prof H E Bradford of the University of Kansas will speak. other program details are awaited as reports from rural district officers come in.
