City police investigated a break-in at the Washington offices of Dr. C. 8. Tam and Dr. K. J. Marshall. Thieves took 300 to 400 capsules, several needles and syringes, and about $5 in cash. Break-in discovered Monday morning.
After burning for 27 days the underground fire at the Washington Sanitary Landfill was declared out today. City officials estimate about $4 000 was spent on equipment and manpower to fight the blaze, the first blaze at the site in ten years.
Victor Bowen a Washington County farmer suffered a farm accident when his foot became entangled in a hay bale. He underwent amputation of the right foot at Mercy Hospital Town City after being treated at Iowa City hospital.
Two rural Clare teenagers Diane Clough 17 and Lanny Clough 14 died when their car collided with a semi at the Clare blacktop U S 169 junction six miles north of here. Two other Clough brothers Ronald 11 and Allen 4 were injured. Driver of the truck Lawrence Trimble 50 of West Bend Wisconsin survived injury.
Hog producers in Washington and adjoining counties invited to enter the open class seventh annual barrow show at the Washington County Fair on Thursday August 8. Judging starts 7 45 p m. Pigs weighed and entered 4 6 p m at the fairgrounds. Entry fee 2 per head with a limit of 2 barrows per farm unit. Two weight classes 200 to 240 pounds. Pigs slaughtered and sold to Oscar Mayer with liveweight price plus premium. Prizes total 75 to top 10 in each class. No carcass placings. carcass information optional at owner’s cost. Twenty Pig Derby entrants may enter up to four pigs for the judging on August 8.
The House Judiciary Committee named Sam Garrison as minority counsel replacing Albert Jenner amid impeachment debate. GOP members Hogan and McClory foresee voting decisions as the debate opens. Garrison urged focusing on public interest over guilt and innocence as Doar leads articles preparation.
A Wellman special council meeting formed a pool study committee led by Jerry Powell to study a municipal swimming pool and possible bond issue. About 25 residents attended as officials discussed funding, taxes, and public input before any action.

The Iowa State Highway Commission invites public input for its Five Year Construction Program. A Program Review in Mount Pleasant on July 29 at 7:30 p.m. will cover projects in Des Moines, Henry, Lee, Louisa, Muscatine, and Washington Counties. District 5 representatives will present planning details under the Action Plan to boost citizen participation.
Washington County 4 H and FFA remind members of the July 24 deadline to enter livestock and science and mechanics projects at the county fair. Entry blanks with fees are due Wednesday in the Extension office for many categories to prepare cards and reserve stalls. Project displays will be housed in the H building with counts similar to last year, more non livestock entries expected.
