United States forces bombed Japanese positions on Kiska and shelled them from heavy and light ships. Japanese shore batteries returned fire but caused no damage to U S vessels. The shelling fits the ongoing softening-up for an anticipated land campaign to oust the Japanese from this Aleutian stronghold.
Des Moines Iowa fell 13 percent short of its 100000 ton scrap metal quota in the first six months of 1943 according to H C Plagman executive secretary of the Iowa salvage committee. The state collected 87736 tons with eleven counties yielding a pound each in a single effort. Best records were set by Black Hawk Linn Cass Dubuque and Marshall counties.
Mrs. Alice Leedom sues Mrs. Esther Styre operator of the Spider Web tavern in Ottumwa for alienation of affections. The case claims Styre associated with Leedom’s husband Lawrence Leedom while Leedom visited Burlington and asks for a writ of attachment on defendant’s money, goods, chattels and credits.
Amana refrigeration division and workers receive the Army and Navy E flag for excellence in war production. Lieut. Col. Herbert R. Watson honors the ceremony at the school auditorium and stresses the flag as a symbol of distinguished service and pride. Louis C. Selzer urges continued effort toward victory.
Five men charged with operating a confidence game in the alleged sale of Mississippi land in 1937 were convicted in circuit court Thursday by a jury of seven women and five men. Counsel for the defendants filed a motion for a new trial and Judge Robert E. Larkin set Sept. 8 for a hearing, deferring sentence and releasing the defendants on bond. Conviction carries a penalty of one to 10 years. The defendants included H. E. Livermore of Davenport Iowa.
At last night's meeting the council refused Hugh Dugall's bid to renew his beer selling permit which would lapse next Tuesday July 27. The decision reduces local beer retail spots to seven in the city.
Henry Horning died last Sunday night and is survived by five grandchildren and two great grandchildren among other relatives.
Dr James A Pollock of Pittsburgh will preach at the Washington churches union service in Central Park Sunday at eight. Rev George Kerr announced the change with Kerr presiding and Eastwood and Trenerry taking invocation and prayer. Pollock, a former Egypt missionary, will speak on “Beginning Where We Are.” If rain, service moves to the Baptist church.
The auditorium of the Baptist church packed for the memorial service honoring Edith Godwin, a high school girl who drowned in the Iowa river near Riverside last Sunday. Rev. Alfred Trenerry gave the address and music featured a vocal number by Jean Atchison, Doris Gray and Bonnie Simpson, with Mrs. Charles McConnell at the piano.

The Rock Island railroad plans to straighten the tracks between Perlee and Libertyville shortening the road by about three miles. The project includes building several large bridges and moving thousands of tons of dirt, affecting roughly 40 property owners in Fairfield and Jefferson County. Work could start within a month with bids placed for grading and new grade crossings, as officials expect easier grades and longer trains with fewer curves.
President Roosevelt defended bombing Rome to save U S lives in Sicily and urged declaring Rome an open city. He said fascists blocked efforts for a year and that Rome contains munitions plants airports and rail facilities aiding southern Italy. The report notes Pope Pius XII’s comments and adds railroad work progress and wartime delays.
President Roosevelt said new plans to stabilize prices are being developed for possible submission to Congress. He spoke after labor leaders from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations urged action to roll back prices to the September 15, 1942 level or scrap the little steel formula and remove Price Administrator Prentiss M. Brown. He noted any plan would require congressional approval due to cost.
The Washington Board of Education voted to discontinue the Washington junior college for one year due to wartime conditions and insufficient enrollment. About 15 to 20 students would have attended, far short of the state mandate of 30. The college has operated 16 years with 751 students to date and may reopen when conditions justify.
The city plans a band concert featuring selections honoring Holmes, Hughes, and Simons. Organizers announce the event date and venue, inviting residents to enjoy a program of marches and solos performed by the municipal band.
Allied forces seize Palermo swiftly cutting the axis from Sicily as the Red Army closes on Orel. In Sicily Canadians clash with the 16th panzer division along Mt Etna approaches Termini Imerese while British and American units push toward Mezzojuso and the northern coast.
The district notes several resignations for the coming year. Mrs Viasta Smith will be replaced as elementary school teacher after moving to Cedar Rapids. Evelyn Mayer leaves LeMars to join Clinton Town schools and Ruth Duncan departs to Memphis to reunite with her husband in the navy.
All members are invited to a dinner at the country club clubhouse next Wednesday evening July 28. The cost is 60 cents per plate. A two ball four some will start on the golf course at five o'clock, and bridge players are invited. Members not yet called should notify Mrs. I. W. Shenefelt by Monday noon.
