Earl G. Miller 58 Republican nominee for secretary of state died after pneumonia illness dating to April. Funeral set for tomorrow at White Funeral Home in Des Moines. Miller served 1939 to 1942 as secretary of state and defeated incumbent Wayne Ropes in the June primary. He had run for governor in 1942 and later noted power shifts in the office as highway patrol and motor vehicle registration moved to public safety. He was a Carlisle Iowa native who moved to Des Moines in 1899 and attended college in Chicago. survived by his widow.
