Hundreds of convicts at Dannemora prison attempted to wreck the power plant and breach walls in a revolt. State troopers and guards fought rebels. two convicts were killed by rifle fire as they tried to scale the walls. About 1,400 were involved at the peak. 900 revolted initially. Fire crews outside the walls fought the carpenter shop blaze but could not save the building.
