Washington reports Elihu Root of New York has accepted the Secretaryship of War, replacing Alger who has resigned. In Cleveland Ohio on July 22 four companies of the Fifth Ohio National Guard were called out by the mayor for strike duty amid an alarming situation.
Bancroft July 22. L T Button of Humboldt organized a United Sons of America lodge here last week. The new order began in Humboldt last fall and is showing rapid growth.
The Wisconsin state Saengerfest opened at Turner hall with an address by President Weber and a response from Gustav Kuesterman. An estimated 15,000 to 18,000 attendees are expected the next day, with delegates including a 50-strong Mayville group staying at Hotel Windsor. Fond du Lac prepared with decorated streets, groves, and refreshment counters for the event.
A Thursday blaze leveled the boiler house of the Escanaba Woodenware company in Escanaba Michigan forcing a temporary plant shutdown for several days. Loss about 1500 dollars covered by insurance. Fire origin unknown. Firemen saved the main factory as wind drove flames.
Advices from Berrien Springs report the Milwaukee Benton Harbor and Columbus railroad will be sold to the Michigan Central company. The move signals a fierce rate war with Graham and Morton and could enable a competing steamboat line between Southern Michigan resorts and Chicago and Milwaukee.
A Manila cable notes the suicide of First Lieutenant John L. Moore of Company D, First Iowa Volunteers. Moore, about 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Moore of Council Bluffs, had written from Manila that he was in the hospital and hoped to be discharged soon. In Des Moines Osborne Diegnan says he will not enter Annapolis, citing a dependent mother and better promotion chances by remaining in his present rank.
Assistant Secretary of War George D. Meiklejohn arrived in Weyauwega on Saturday and left for New London. He will tour Stevens Point and Phillips before returning for a public reception next week. He plans to spend the remainder of his vacation in Weyauwega, his boyhood home.
Two boys fishing in North park at 5 am yesterday found the body of Frank Koebler a florist. The man was seen in the park Tuesday afternoon and died likely late that day with a soil basket and cane nearby. Blood was noted at the scene.
In Racine on July 18 Charles Johnson of Pease Manufacturing fell from a ladder with a kerosene can in hand. The spout pierced his neck and broke through the mouth area. he nearly bled to death but survived. He is 25. In Salt Lake Judge Norrell sentenced Angus M. Cannon, who pleaded guilty to polygamy for marrying State Senator Mattie Hughes Cannon, to a fine of 196.
In Cleveland on July 22 a dynamite bomb exploded on the roof of the Big Consolidated barn at Lake View causing extensive damage and panic. A separate attempt to blow up a street car near Henry A. Everett’s residence failed to harm anyone. Police pursued nonunion workers as mobs roamed Pearl Street.
In Dearborn county Indiana a man named Joseph Kruger shot a man he mistook for a burglar. The victim was his own 17 year old son Fred Kruger. The incident followed burglaries at the Kruger property in West Harrison. The father appeared distraught and hope for recovery is slim.
Joliet headlines name Colonel John Lambert as a possible successor to Shelby M. Cullom. Lambert, president of the American Wire and Steel Co and on Governor Tanner’s staff, says the report is news to him though friends might support his candidacy. Cullom visits Chicago and shows little concern over the rumor.
In Calumet Michigan on July 22 residents press for a street car loop around the copper country. Miners companies block routes by owning much land complicating entry into the business district. Petitions for franchises circulate and gain support from local business leaders.
In Kenosha Wisconsin July 22 laborers halted work on three city buildings. All masons and hod carriers stopped, with other workers to join in the afternoon. The strike began at the T. J. Meyers block and spread to other sites where the same contractors employ crews.
F. F. Tib, agent for Northern Grain, was held up by two masked men four miles east of Barron Wisconsin on Thursday and robbed of 615 dollars. Sheriff Rossback leads a large posse in a wide search as three suspects are detained nearby near the Menominee river bridge, a former site of attempted holdups.
In Niles on July 22 officials report peppermint oil crops in Kalamazoo St Joseph Cass Van Buren and Allegan counties will start within two weeks. Spring weather was harsh but six weeks of favorable growth boosted output to hundreds of thousands of dollars in value.
Secretary Alger will continue to discharge all duties as secretary of war through August 1 the date of his resignation. He attended the cabinet meeting at 11 o clock carrying routine matters.
Colonel Robert G Ingersoll died suddenly at his home Walston on Hudson near Dobbs Ferry after a prolonged heart disease. He spoke his last words Oh better and died without a groan as his brother did before death. He was an agnostic famed for his anti Christian writings and speeches born Aug 11 1833 in Dresden New York.

Des Moines July 22 Johnny Main of New Virginia appeared in Justice Blyler's court and posted bond for his preliminary hearing next Tuesday in the shooting case against Billy Smith. Meanwhile Gov Shaw granted pardon to John Young a convict at Anamosa State Penitentiary serving a three year term for assault with intent to rape after a surgeon’s note suggested the term would end in forty six days and survival was unlikely.
Judge Walter Hayes of Haynes Schuyler firm in Des Moines is trying to secure a pardon for Mark Hallinan who was convicted of manslaughter in Clinton county district court in 1890 and sentenced to six years but has not served. The case stirred strong local interest with two Ward factions led by Hallinan and Laben against the Bowlman faction led by the Bowmans.
Des Moines reports Traismen traveling through the city aboard Milwaukee freight trains bound for Dakota. On top of cars 100 to 300 men form gangs, forcing haulage as crews are outnumbered. Most head to harvest wheat fields in Dakota for two months, welcomed by locals and stations with food.
Early today Officer Secovil heard a glass break on East Walnut and found a man, Noble Lockhart, reaching into the Lazarus store at 414 East Walnut. Lockhart was arrested and searched as officers arrived, revealing pockets full of cigarettes and four oranges, with the damaged window filled by items seized.
Mason City reports the death of Col. George Poisall at his Kensett home. Poisall was a well known newspaper man and at his passing he served as postmaster of Kensett, Iowa.
A fine new hotel is being erected in Grinnell and will soon be enclosed. It will be the third fine hotel in the town.
Baptists from Cedar Rapids and across Iowa attended a daylong excursion at Weed Park in Muscatine yesterday. The event featured meals and fellowship, with attendees enjoying the outing despite the weather and travel.
