Motorscyclist dies in Wayland crash on Highway 78

An unnamed 30 year old man died Saturday evening near Wayland after losing control on Highway 78. He traveled eastbound on the west edge of Wayland, left the road, struck a ditch and tumbled end over end. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Iowa Patrol authorities.

Youth Employment and 4-H Camp Representations

The Youth Employment Service offers summer work such as hay baling corn shelling bean walking and babysitting through the Chamber of Commerce office. Washington County 4-H members Barb Frazer and Marty Sojka attend two camps at Madrid July 28 to August 2 funded by Rotary and Kiwanis scholarships.

Century-old iron casket opened in Bellevue burial

Law enforcement and mortuary officials in Bellevue Iowa opened a century-old iron casket found weekend. The decomposed body of an elderly woman believed buried in 1850 was found. Foul play ruled out. casket to be re buried at undisclosed Jackson County location. The woman’s name was not immediately known.

County Mayors Tall Corn Contest Nearing Final Weeks

Washington county’s entry stands among the top ten with a 94 inch stalk measured July 15 by coordinator Al Peterson. 36 county seat mayors entered the Cedar Rapids event sponsored by Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Bureau and Kirkwood Community College. The final rating occurs August 15 and the winning mayor will be recognized in Cedar Rapids.

Cosmonauts land safely on Central Asian prairie

Two Soviet cosmonauts Valeri Kubasov and Alexei Leonov returned to Earth in Kazakhstan after six days in space, carrying five US flags to mark a historic cooperation with Apollo astronauts Stafford Brand and Slayton. Recovery teams reported good health. the crew hailed the landing spot as wonderful. Apollo crews remained in orbit for three more days as joint space efforts push toward peaceful cooperation.

SEATS cuts back bus service in Cedar Rapids area

SEATS the States Elderly Area Ten Transportation System announced service reductions to cut operating costs.
