An unnamed 30 year old man died Saturday evening near Wayland after losing control on Highway 78. He traveled eastbound on the west edge of Wayland, left the road, struck a ditch and tumbled end over end. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Iowa Patrol authorities.
The Youth Employment Service offers summer work such as hay baling corn shelling bean walking and babysitting through the Chamber of Commerce office. Washington County 4-H members Barb Frazer and Marty Sojka attend two camps at Madrid July 28 to August 2 funded by Rotary and Kiwanis scholarships.
Law enforcement and mortuary officials in Bellevue Iowa opened a century-old iron casket found weekend. The decomposed body of an elderly woman believed buried in 1850 was found. Foul play ruled out. casket to be re buried at undisclosed Jackson County location. The woman’s name was not immediately known.
United Press Internations reports heavy rains flood parts of the East, disrupting Penn Central and Amtrak service between New York City and Philadelphia with full restoration possible by Tuesday. Local NYC service limited to Princeton Junction in New Jersey. A bank robbery in Sioux Center Iowa leads to an arrested suspect as FBI probes the incident. A tentative postal strike agreement averts nationwide action, with a new pact reached just after the Sunday deadline.
Washington county’s entry stands among the top ten with a 94 inch stalk measured July 15 by coordinator Al Peterson. 36 county seat mayors entered the Cedar Rapids event sponsored by Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Bureau and Kirkwood Community College. The final rating occurs August 15 and the winning mayor will be recognized in Cedar Rapids.
Two Soviet cosmonauts Valeri Kubasov and Alexei Leonov returned to Earth in Kazakhstan after six days in space, carrying five US flags to mark a historic cooperation with Apollo astronauts Stafford Brand and Slayton. Recovery teams reported good health. the crew hailed the landing spot as wonderful. Apollo crews remained in orbit for three more days as joint space efforts push toward peaceful cooperation.
Washington County 4 H members compete with morning and afternoon sessions for girls and evening sessions for boys at the YMCA in Washington on July 23. Judges Mary Miller and Larry Audlehelm with Mrs. Larry Beyer preside. 4 H committee members Ed Whetstine Si Finke Martha Witthoft Mary Statler Margaret Scott Janet Spenner assist. Parents may visit 8 45 a m to noon 1 00 p m to 4 00 p m and 7 00 p m to 10 00 p m to see the projects and speaking skills of the junior intermediate and senior 4 Hers.

United Press reports six people died in Iowa weekend crashes including four motorcyclists. Victims include Frederick Meister 21 Mason City and Mark Adreon 21 plus Charles Bates 21 Mount Pleasant. Other deaths involve Gail Burgess 21 Lisbon Cletus Wulfekuh 52 Coggin. Details list crashes at Keokuk Mason City Mount Pleasant Lisbon Buck Creek and a Delaware County road.
SEATS the States Elderly Area Ten Transportation System announced service reductions to cut operating costs. Reservation hours shift to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays with decisions on changes to be made by county advisory committees. The cutbacks aim to keep service running through August 31 when interim funding ends. Reservations: 1 800 382 5984.
Kalona Town Players present Agatha Christie drama Ten Little Indians at the Kalona Recreation Center Thursday and Friday at 8 pm. Tickets are 1.50 for adults and 0.75 for students. cast includes Gascho, Wagner, Scott, Escher, Saville, Enfield, Adams, Miksch, Beck, Hall and others.
Senator Eugene Hill leads opposition to legalizing parimutuel betting in Iowa. He cites church and civic groups planning petitions and warns Kinley may lack votes to bring the measure to the floor. Kinley says debate should proceed with votes or no votes.
