Clarence Waddle, 47, of Pulaski, died at a hospital Monday night from injuries after his oil truck collided on Highway 3 near Milton with a truck driven by J D Dudley of Centerville. Dudley was not seriously hurt.
Council Bluffs five year old driver for the city emergency unit died at a hospital as the third victim of a tank car explosion in Union Pacific yards on July 11. Fire Chief Waldo Merrill had just provided blood for a transfusion when the death was announced.
Capt Harry Price of Ottumwa's state guard troop urged full proper equipment for the Iowa guardsmen. He criticized ongoing empty promises and said units are worn Army clothing unequipped for 25 years, with most maintenance funds spent on headquarters while local units are neglected.
Eighteen planes used in the naval air cadet training program at Western Union College airport in LeMars were damaged by a Tuesday morning windstorm. Some craft wrecked beyond repair, but enough remain to carry on training. Planes owned by Beacon Airways, Inc. Motors torn loose wings torn off and planes blown from moorings. Hangars and some planes inside them were not damaged.
In Detroit on July 21 a walkout by 2,500 United Automobile Workers members halted Ford Motor Company River Rouge engine production. The stoppage started at 4 30 a m over the discharge of four shop committee members, with full output returning by mid morning then a later 524 cylinder division workers sat briefly before resuming. The dispute involved the foreman accused of docking 17 women for quitting on July 1 and led to the four committeemen being discharged and the foreman moved to Highland Park.
Brig. Gen. Norman F. Ramsey announced a 15 percent reduction in civilian employees at the Rock Island arsenal last May. He and Chief of Ordinance Levin H. Campbell will set a maximum number of workers effective Sept. 30. All shifts stay 8 hours daily, 48 weekly. overtime only in emergencies.
One hundred Italian prisoners of war, from Jes and Libya, arrive Monday night to harvest on the 6,400 acre Adams Brothers & Co. farm. They average 27 to 28 years old and have been prisoners two to three years. Both farm proprietors and prisoners express mixed feelings as the program begins.
Iowa averages a monthly state payroll of about 1.62 million dollars paying 14 472 workers. Nationally 3 008 519 federal executive employees existed in April with Jan 1 totals showing 2 828 748 regular staff paid 470 334 353 dollars monthly, averaging 184 dollars each, indicating growth from earlier payroll levels.

Nancy Oakes De Marigny visited her husband Count Alfred De Marigny for ninety minutes in Nassau prison where he awaits a Monday preliminary hearing on charges he killed his father in law Sir Harry Oakes. The visit marks the couple’s first meeting since his detention.

The six young people include the 0. bl. male quartette and Gerald Pontsier Max Noe Virgil Carlson Louis Prock. They will perform saxophone piano accordion trumpets violins baritone horn. Rev O Ralph Isbill and wife, returned missionaries from Sumatra, will deliver a message of great interest. Public invited.
Pasadena reports a $2,000,000 wind tunnel under construction at the California Institute of Technology will generate wind speeds to 700 miles per hour, far beyond the 500 miles per hour limit of existing facilities.
With months elapsed since she left for college in Bennington Vermont, unconfirmed reports say De Marigny sought Toronto criminal lawyer Peter White to defend her. White is said to be en route to Nassau to take up the case.

Leon Beatty post of the American Legion held a picnic at Sunset Park with 60 to 75 members attending a buffet of fried chicken beans and potato salad topped by ice cream and iced tea. Officers were installed and delegates elected for the state convention with 37 members renewing dues.
Judge J. G. Patterson of Oska loosa granted a decree of divorce in the case of Lorene Foster against Henry H. Foster of the Wellman community. The plaintiff was awarded custody of two minor children, alimony of 20 dollars monthly, and 15 dollars monthly for the children’s care and maintenance until they reach age, with a property settlement agreed. Most court time covered routine matters during the March term, and Patterson plans another day of court on August 2.
Allied forces overran Enna and advanced toward Catania on Sicily as the Axis defense wavered. About 40,000 prisoners have fallen to the Allies, with Allied and radio reports signaling a rapid fall of Catania and a stronger push toward the northern coastal area.
Mobilization Director James F. Byrnes said a week to ten days will decide if Midwest gasoline restrictions will tighten while Eastern relaxations occur. Harold L. Ickes urged equalizing rationing east of the Rockies. Midwest congressmen oppose tighter limits, eastern lawmakers support them as a supply boost. Byrnes will make the final call.
A county American Legion meeting will be held in Crawfordsville on Tuesday evening July 27. Officers will be elected with post commanders acting as the nominating committee. A large turnout from all county towns is expected. a prior notice misadvertised the event as Legion Auxiliary.
