Auto unions seek guaranteed income in radical plan
DETROIT UPI negotiators study a 1967 three year contract proposal from the United Auto Workers for a guaranteed annual income. The plan would guarantee up to 52 paychecks a year during layoffs, potentially totaling two years with other benefits. Workers would bid for available jobs during a layoff. those not bidding would not receive the guarantee and would rely on state unemployment plus supplements. The mechanism hinges on seniority and company decisions to lay off workers amid declining sales. The statement notes 16,000 vessels in the Rhine River trade as unrelated context.
