W J Bryan has been secured by the Allerton Chautauqua assembly to speak on August 14 replacing the planned August 15 opening. An excellent program is arranged for that day. Osteopaths of Iowa push for recognition and a five member state board.
In Muscatine on July 20 Ernest Lambert fell under a passenger train while riding as a thief avoiding the Du rant line. Doctors say his right leg was severed above the ankle in the incident. The event disrupted the night service near town.
Des Moines on July 20 Captain Amos Brandt received a telegram from Colonel Craig of the Thirty-second United States volunteers stating war department authority to remain ten days there to secure recruits. He has set headquarters at the Fourth street recruiting station and will work with Captain McQuiston. Frank Alberson was a passenger for Mt. Union this morning.
Indiana State Tax Board will rule on taxing pipelines by earning capacity after railroad sales. Current method taxes plants in ground. critics say valuation is too low. Major companies including Standard Oil Cudahys and Dietrich syndicate will present books next month. Appeals go to the U S Supreme Court.
The Scott street plant of American Steel and Wire restarted Tuesday with a double turn and about 700 workers back on duty. Illinois Steel red mills Nos 1 and 3 began yesterday. No 2 today, after a shutdown since July 1. About 600 men to be employed at the three rod mills despite the pending new scale. Mrs. W R Bends of Bay City Mich is the sole survivor of a thirteen person party after a Koyukuk river expedition. her husband and eleven others died attempting the route from Kotzebue sound.
Monroe Hedges aged 106 chastised his son Hiram aged 70 after a drunken attack on Hiram’s wife. Police Judge Cox fined Hiram but did not rule on the father's disciplinary authority. The elderly man struck the son with his cane, declaring he had to dress him down.
George M. Valentine, a New Jersey bank embezzler, was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty. He confessed to stealing $130,000.
Washington reports Secretary Alger tendered his resignation from the war portfolio to the president. The move takes effect Aug 1 and follows a Normanhurst conference with Vice President Hobart. Meantime Meiklejohn is to oversee the department temporarily as the president selects a permanent successor.
Democrats of national importance began to arrive in Chicago for the national committee gathering at the Sherman House. Notables include George Fred Williams of Massachusetts seen as eastern candidate for second on the Bryan ticket, John W. Tomlinson of Alabama, True Morris of New Hampshire, Judge James P. Jarvin of Kentucky, and several McLean men from Ohio.
Chicago report lists results from National League games in Baltimore Philadelphia New York Brooklyn Boston Washington and Cleveland with scores. Western League shows Milwaukee and Kansas City matches. Also note the drowned camper Ted Andrews found in Shell Rock River near Waterloo Iowa. he hailed from Rockford Illinois.
A Milwaukee Hotel Grace fire on Park and Reed streets sparked a roof collapse that buried firemen. Chief Foley and 40 men, rescue efforts saved most. Edward Haley died, others injured including Chief Foley and several captains. About 32 slight injuries reported.
