London July 18 Winston Churchill formally urged the House of Commons to drop the bread rationing plan, arguing it unnecessary in peace. He backed the public and baker opposition to the rationing slated to start Sunday as a first major challenge to the wartime policy and labor government.
Esther M. Squire, superintendent of Washington county hospital, announces a 20 percent rate rise for Blue Cross subscribers. The Blue Cross board voted the increase at its last Des Moines meeting citing higher costs across departments including supplies, food, fuel, and especially wages. New services and drugs like penicillin drive costs. Blue Cross has no dollar limit on charges except room, x ray, and anesthesia administration. The average cost per person per day is up 25 percent since 1944. Hospital Service Inc. reports 295,106 members enrolled and $915,059.23 paid for hospitalization in the first half of 1946.
In Jerusalem on July 18, the Palestine Jewish general strike ended at midnight. About 2000 Jewish internees were served their first meal in 48 hours, easing fears of broader conflict. Sir Alan Cunningham flew to London for talks on the Palestine situation while Tel Aviv mass meetings urged continued non cooperation with Britain. Zalman Rubashov warned there could be no political negotiations while Jewish leaders remained imprisoned.
Yesterday in Washington the maximum reached 92 degrees. A hotter day is expected today with temperatures rising across the region.
Farmers report sharp declines in flies after spraying with DDT. Statements from Mrs Raymond Benell and Lloyd Foster praise effectiveness and low effort. Recommendations include spraying buildings and livestock with wettable powder dilution. Seven demonstrations were held at local farms as part of the county fly control program.

Mrs. Cecile A. Tarpey of San Fernando California was the high bidder at yesterday's auction for the old nurses' home north of the county hospital. Her bid of 6600 secured the large 12 room frame house on a 106 by 159 foot lot. The property formerly housed nurses before the new nurses' home was built with two adjacent county lots across the street to the west.
The Greater Rainbow Shows carnival will perform at the Armory grounds in Washington all of next week. Sponsored by Leon Beatty post of the American Legion, the event invites local residents to view the attractions.
The parcels near the hospital were auctioned and sold to Howard McBride for 1050 dollars. Brown & Bruty acted as auctioneers. The property has a frontage of 12 feet.

Washington Iowa reports that Vice Admiral Robert B Carney former wartime chief of staff to Admiral Halsey in the Pacific and deputy chief of naval operations will speak at the 1946 Iowa Legion convention in Des Moines Aug 1921. Also on the program is General Wainwright who earned the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal.
Maytag president announced that the company has less than two days’ production in warehouses for washers. The statement follows a civilian production administration inventory control order to prevent hoarding of scarce household appliances and keep prices from rising.
Judge J. G. Patterson of Oska loosa will be in Washington next Monday for a day of court. He told the clerk he is ready to attend to any court matters local attorneys have for him that day.

United Press reports Generalissimo Stalin reshuffles the Red army top command. Marshal Georgi K. Zhukov, the Soviet Union’s leading World War II hero, is relieved of high command and assigned to a provincial Odessa post. No public Soviet confirmation yet.
In Kyoto Japan July 18 the provost marshal reports an American soldier was murdered and his body found stuffed in a footlocker near his barracks. The autopsy shows a neck blow followed by strangulation. the man had been missing since July 12. No motive or witnesses identified yet.
Funeral plans were set in Humboldt Iowa for 12 year old Leslie Willhite son of Mr and Mrs Daniel Willhite after he was fatally struck by a truck while riding his bicycle on Highway 169 yesterday.
Ruthven Iowa July 18 final rites for Phyllis Mae Fieseler 16 months old daughter of Mr and Mrs William Fieseler. She died after being fatally struck Tuesday when her father backed his car from the driveway at the family farm near Ruthven. She died in a Spencer hospital a few hours later.
President Truman said he would campaign actively this summer if necessary to help the Democratic Party in the fall elections. He indicated no fixed tour plans, but would speak if required and opposed Rep. Roger C. Slaughter in Missouri's primary, endorsing Enos Axtell instead. He plans to vote in Independence and return to Washington after the Missouri primary.
An illuminating gas main explosion in Warauam Massachusetts today killed at least six and left more than 25 people critically injured. The blast wrecked several shops in Flagstaff square and shattered windows for blocks. State guardsmen police and auxiliary units controlled the scene as fire crews searched debris for additional casualties.
