A Mason City man Carlson picked up a vacationing hitchhiker to help harvest hay near Blencoe Iowa. The man fainted in the field, recovered, and later disappeared after offering to see a movie and taking Carlson’s pickup. Police seek leads.
Berlin reports German panzer columns breaking through the Stalin line and moving deep into Russia with promising results expected by week’s end. Moscow says Russians counterattack and defend against fierce battles on Leningrad and Moscow fronts. Helsinki cites Berlin advices of German advances within 65 miles of Leningrad and 100 miles southeast along the railway toward the city.
Robert Dean Westphal six year old son of Ed A Westphal and wife of Paullina died from injuries after falling from the rear of a pickup truck driven by his brother Charles while in the Westphal farmyard. He suffered a broken left leg and internal injuries and died several hours later at Sacred Heart hospital LeMars. He is survived by his parents a brother and a sister.
Carl Keul a 47 year old union official received an indeterminate term not to exceed three years in Fort Madison penitentiary after District Judge Lou Ladd overruled a motion for new trial. Keul was convicted May 26 as the first of five defendants charged with conspiring to injure the business of another truck operator and remains free on 2500 dollars bond pending appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court.
Iowa City announces administrator Robert E. B. Neff and acting medical director Dr Wilbur R. Miller for the state psychopathic hospital. Miller also serves as acting head of the psychiatry department while awaiting a permanent replacement for Dr Andrew Woods, who retires July 1.
Marion Wormley aged 16 was struck by a bull he was driving from a pasture and suffered an arm fracture with possible internal injuries. He faces a month in the hospital, his physician said. His younger brother Eldon, riding a pony nearby, rushed in and drove the bull away. The brothers are sons of Fred Wormley, a dairy farmer south of Newton.
A justice court jury found Selby Produce Co. guilty on a charge under the Iowa cream grading law brought by the state department of agriculture. The firm contests the law's constitutionality and plans an appeal to district court.
Officers in Atlantic hold John Gough 38 a former Seattle dock worker on suspicions tied to the Mattson kidnapping murder case in Washington. Patrolman Woods says Gough resembles a witness sketch. Gough says he left Seattle years ago and arrived from St Louis seeking harvest work. He notes prior arrests in Los Angeles and Little Rock and BI or FBI checks.
Judge P J Siegers ordered Washington county sheriff H M Putnam to destroy intoxicating liquor and containers in possession, seized from various violators. List includes multiple whiskeys, wine, and containers with amounts and partial fills stated. Separate actions: Brinton case set for July 29, Cox v German verdict for plaintiff, and suit for $13,199.58 by Mary E Nickolaus against James F Hoskins and Laura M Hoskins. Louis J Kehoe represents plaintiff.
Des Moines July 16 Iowa's draft quota for August is 1022 white selections and 28 Negroes the selective service headquarters announced today This will bring the total number drafted from Iowa to over 1000 characters

General Maxime Weygand, Vichy commander in Africa, is appointed governor-general of Algeria succeeding Admiral Jean Abrial. Weygand will retain his role as government general delegate in French Africa while Abrial returns to Vichy.

Survived by son Harry Wright of Fairfield daughter Mrs. Ray Franklin of Davenport a sister pair Mrs. Lizzie Ives and Mrs. Ola McCorkle in Washington state and by three grandchildren. Burial party arrives from Davenport and will stay with the Conger family as they attend the funeral and burial tomorrow in Fairfield.
The naval transport West Point with nearly 500 expelled axis consular agents and propagandists aboard left New York for Lisbon after delays due to late passenger arrivals and baggage checks. The 26,000 ton ship carried five inch and anti aircraft guns and gear to protect against magnetic mines.
Joe Simmering plans a group trip from Washington to Chicago for a White Sox Indians game on Sunday August 17. A Milwaukee railroad special train would depart at 3:00 AM and return 5:30 AM Monday at a total cost of 7.25 dollars including railway fare and a box seat. A 75 passenger minimum is needed with about 50 pledged and 125 passengers could secure a better rate. payment due by August 1.
Des Moines reports rapid corn tasseling over the past week in Iowa. Federal Meteorologist Charles D Reed notes the crop has a rich dark green color and is generally clean of weeds with less than the usual cultivation.
An auction dispersed the items from the studio where Frederick Knight Logan, famed composer of the Missouri Waltz and Pale Moon, wrote many of his best known works. Logan died in 1928 and his mother Virginia Knight Logan has overseen events related to the estate.

Two cars collided about 8 30 yesterday evening five and a half miles northwest of Washington. Harold Rey nolds of Washington and Virgel Metzger of Winfield drove the vehicles. Both cars suffered about 200 dollars in damage. Mrs Bertie Wallace and Mrs Lee Wallace, passengers in the Reynolds car, were bruised but not seriously hurt.
Washington July 16 The Office of Production Management warned there will be no new aluminum for civilian use in the first six months of the year and a shortage of fabricated aluminum parts for defense. Demand will consume the entire 1941 aluminum output of about 400 million pounds. Knudsen and Hillman rebutted claims that no shortage exists and called such statements harmful to the defense program.
The deceased former opera singer aged 92 lived with a housekeeper until last November. Her estate lists Logan's $4,000 grand piano, hand carved furniture, and crystal chandeliers as studio furnishings. Autographed photos from dozens of famous musicians were not sold and will be hung in the Oskaloosa public library.
Several hundred workers from rival AFL and CIO unions fought in the street at a steel fabricating plant warehouse in Cleveland. Funeral services for Mrs. J. H. Rodruck, who died Monday night at her daughter Mrs. Clarence Hawkins's home, will be held Thursday at 1 30 p m in the Hawkins residence and 2 p m at the United Presbyterian church in Columbus City. Rev M A Robeson will officiate with burial in Columbus City cemetery.
Reports from the county hospital say Owen Kelley, 65, of Hartford Kansas, is in critical condition after a fall from a railroad bridge near Verdi Monday night. He suffered a fractured hip a broken leg and two fractures of the pelvis and lay on the ground all night before a passing train crew found him.
