Farmers report substantial crop losses from a narrow hail swath near Washington and Richland. Hailstones the size of marbles piled into two foot drifts in places, with 50 percent oats damage on 32 acres and 5 to 9 percent corn loss on a 14 acre field. Gardens and corn leaves near tasseling were damaged.

Iowa Highway Patrolman Robert Wilke admitted fabricating a weekend kidnapping with Nancy Grubbs. He spent 46 hours in a Sioux City motel and embezzled his revolver, facing up to 10 years. Grubbs was arrested in Kansas. Wilke and Grubbs plotted after Wilke's arrest and hospitalization for shock.

The advance sale of tickets for the Washington County 411 and FFA fair has begun. Girl 3 Killed After Falling From Car
Laura Marie Jones a three year old girl from Emerson was killed when she fell from a car as it rolled away from a grocery store. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Leland Jones and died at a hospital. A second child in the car was unharmed. It was the first traffic fatality of the year for Montgomery County.
