Goldwater Seen Likely To Secure Nomination At Convention
At the Cow Palace San Francisco the Republican National Convention opened with Sen. Barry Goldwater poised for a first ballot presidential nomination. Gov. William Scranton of Pennsylvania pressed a last dash effort, urging a television debate and a platform fight, but Goldwater aides dismissed the move as unlikely to derail the Arizona front-runner. Scranton sent a defiant letter and challenged the process, while delegates settled in as Hatfield's keynote address loomed and the platform vote was slated for Tuesday.
