Gov Robert D Ray will appoint a panel within a month to study the Iowa National Guard manpower shortage. Adj Gen Joseph May said the panel will report early next year. The guard numbers 7411, about 5.5 percent short of 7908, the lowest in five years.
A weather notice notes some afternoon cloudiness today and Sunday with generally fair conditions. It warns of continued unseasonably cool temperatures tonight and today. It predicts warmer Sunday with highs around the 70s and lows in the 50s, with highs ranging from the lower 80s in the east to the lower 80s in the west.
Des Moines police intensify hunt for motive in the strangulation death of 21 year old Diane Marie Hofield whose decomposed body was found in a car trunk. Investigators say the victim was last seen July 4 and strangled with a strip of cloth, with hands and feet bound by towels. watch and rings missing as toil continues.
UPI reports U S District Court Judge Frank H Freedman upheld an Interior Department order banning naked swimming along the Cape Cod National Seashore. The judge said the problem is mainly onlookers causing traffic jams littering beach erosion and property damage. The Civil Liberties union challenged the ban as violating rights to expression association and personal liberty.
CIA says Alexander Butterfield held a 1959 military liaison clearance and later CIA intelligence clearances while in the White House, denies he was ever a CIA employee, and rejects claims of infiltration. The White House says there is no information substantiating that a former Nixon aide was a CIA agent.
Governor Robert D. Ray approved nine bills including a corporate farming measure aimed at processors of beef and pork with $10 million in wholesale value. The law bars owning feedlots and restricts land ownership, requires extensive farm operation reports, and tasks county assessors to reveal landholders to the Secretary of State.
E K Schlapkohl superintendent of Washington Community Schools is among 500 educators chosen for a July 2026 seminar at Stephens College in Columbia Missouri. The IDEA program will cover school reform studies linking student rights with responsibilities and focus on moral citizenship education and student accountability.
Maurice Meyer, after nineteen years and over 200000 miles, retires as a Washington driver due to policy requiring retirement at a set age. He recalls calm handling of boisterous students, a flawless safety record, and memorable mud and weather incidents along routes including Coppock road. He plans to stay active with the American Legion and may seek a SEATS bus job if a vacancy arises.

Treasurer auditor clerk of court recorder and sheriff rise by 1500 annually. supervisors by 1000. deputies earn 80 to 85 percent of their directors. County home staff janitors nurses and secretaries also receive raises. engineer remains the highest paid at 23000 yearly.
