Washington sweltered in a heat wave as temperatures neared 100 degrees. The city endured a second week of high heat with readings near the 100 degree mark, including the thermometer at the Washington State Bank hitting 99 degrees.
Washington unions and five airlines Eastern United Trans World National Northwest clash over pay and benefits costs. IAM chief Joseph W. Ramsey says airline estimates inflate union demands by 25 million, citing union figures of 89 million over three years versus 114 million claimed by carriers.
Sinclair Petrochemicals and Fort Madison officials announce a $60 million fertilizer plant to be built on 1500 acres along the Mississippi in Green Bay Township. The project aims for 300 jobs, 200 Midwest sales outlets, and 2 million tons yearly throughput with bond financing pending voter approval on August 4.
Warren Skip Goodwin a former Washington man who ran an Abilene Kansas airport perished with his 17 year old son Terry when their light plane failed after fuel line trouble near Claremont Denver suburb. Funeral set for Abilene Wednesday at 2 pm. Survivors include wife Lola Snider three other children and mother Retta Goodwin with brothers Cyril and Tom Goodwin and others listed.

U S planes skirmished with Soviet made MIG 21 fighters over North Vietnam in a massive raid. A U S Air Force plane was shot down by ground fire and a Navy jet fell in today’s raids. Four South Vietnamese helicopters were downed and Viet Cong forces near Saigon faced a large counterattack. Navy Secretary Nitze voiced concern over captured U S pilots as the page continued.
In a UPI survey after the congressional recess, lawmakers report constituents nationwide want out of Vietnam only after victory. The top domestic concerns include high prices, tight money, open housing, and government spending, with interest rates and loans a frequent issue. Nevada talks center on FBI wiretaps, while Johnson's popularity fluctuates among districts.
The Southeast Iowa Community Action Program Board met in the REC Building Mount Pleasant on Monday evening July 11. The measure would fund three major programs including Nike-X antimissile work and accelerate nuclear Navy efforts with $150 million for an atomic frigate. A 3.2 cent across the board pay raise for uniformed service members is included, retroactive to July 1. The bill totals $356 million in its first year and exceeds Johnson’s request by $553 million.
A statewide effort in Iowa will spend 1.7 million dollars over three years to study how alcoholism and poverty relate and to expand services. Funded mainly by the Office of Economic Opportunity and supported by Governor Harold Hughes, the plan includes eight community coordinators and three halfway houses to aid indigent alcoholics and coordinate interagency efforts across state agencies and universities.
