Swine Sanitation From Roundworm Findings

A British officer in Hong Kong showed man and swine roundworms share a circuitous route through rats and mice. American Ransom found a similar path in pigs, traveling through blood from intestine to lungs, then back to the gut via windpipe. Soil in old hog lots teemed with live roundworm eggs. half grown pigs housed many adults. Ransom devised a sanitation plan starting with clean farrowing quarters, brushing sows, washing udders, and placing sows in clean pens before farrowing. At about 10 days old, pigs and sows moved to clean pasture for four months, reducing infection risk. The method, first tested in 1919 in McLean County, Illinois, cut pig losses from parasites and filthborne diseases by 98 percent.
