Berlin's western sectors face a threatened food shortage as airlift supplies struggle to keep pace with demand for about 2.5 million residents. An American military official said stocks would last only four weeks, contradicting earlier hopes that relief would top the supply by mid July.

Washington Municipal band and Veterans of Foreign Wars present a memorial concert honoring local war dead. The program opens with Salute to the Chief of Staff and a medley for all branches, features Over There duet, and includes Youd Be So Nice to Come Home To and Say a Prayer for the Boy Over There. Esther Geerdes performs Sleep Soldier Lov Sleep Sailor Boy as the memorial segment closes.
Washington county farmers face rising grasshopper numbers in scattered fields. Extension director Leo Sturgeon urges immediate spraying of infested areas with recommended materials such as dichlorodane toxaphene or benzene hexa chloride per Iowa State College guidance.
Attys for Earl Hoover and Homer Peiffer filed appeals in the district court seeking review of damages awarded by a state highway relocation board. Hoover received 875 dollars and Peiffer 455 dollars in the condemnation for relocation of Highway 1 in Brighton. Appeals target the September term starting September 6.
Mrs. E. E. Ward describes her trip to Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention and visits to national landmarks. She notes crossings of twelve state lines, Arlington Cemetery memories, a band concert at the Capitol, and a trip to the Smithsonian before the convention sessions begin. She also mentions a Delaware shipyard visit and a sloop recalling Solomon Islands days.
Federal Judge Goldsborough announced a settlement between the united mine workers and the nations ten biggest steel companies. A compromise contract ends the strike over union shop and miners return to work tomorrow morning with the June 20 agreement applied to the commercial industry. The main issue over a union shop provision will proceed before the labor relations board and appellate courts.
A price support loan program for 1948 wheat will be available to Washington County farmers after harvest under the AAA. Loans at $2.07 per bushel apply to farm and warehouse stored wheat with a minimum service fee of $3.00 for farm storage or $1.50 for warehouse storage. Oats loans at 70 cents per bushel are administered through CCC with PMA and county AAA. Farmers may apply after harvest but no later than December 1, 1949 for full information in the county AAA office.
Word reached here of Ross Boyer death in Marshalltown on Monday morning from a heart attack. He leaves wife plus son Frank and Ed in Marshalltown and daughters Mrs Max Raymond Mrs Jeannette Hynik and Shirley in Newton. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 30 p m in Marshalltown with burial there.
The Washington YMCA amended its constitution changing the July meeting to the second Monday in May and lowering membership age to seven. A board session followed with L. C. Willits reappointed as president and committee rosters announced, listing chairs for Physical, Young Men, Boys, Religious, Rural, and other departments.
E H Engel has bought the Farm er's Produce market in Crawfords ville from G M Hum ble. The store will keep its name with Engel and his son Dale in charge and Richard Lease staying on. It will sell eggs cream and poultry and offer a full Wayne feeds line.
At the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on July 13 1948 delegates drafted Alben W Barkley a 70 year old veteran and kentucky senator to be President Truman’s running mate on the first ballot McGrath announced Barkley’s selection while Truman’s ticket faces limited opposition from anti Truman candidates and a north south battle over Negro rights and labor legislation.
Mr and Mrs J M Finney received word of the death in Stafford Kansas of Mrs Finneys cousin Sam Wallace Funeral will be held in Stafford Wednesday at 4 pm with burial there The Wallace home was in Washington years ago when Mr Wallace s father was with the grocery firm Wallace and Knox His wife Nellie Anderson was raised in Knox area The fastest bird known to man is the swift with some swifts reaching 200 miles per hour.
The Engel family will establish a new home in Crawfordsville in the near future, signaling a relocation to the city and a forthcoming residence.
