Dr. R T Paige, third Black Hawk county doctor robbed this year, relieved of about 20 dollars at the Savage door. Newton Doyle Van Wyk, 9, Kellogg, died from burns suffered while playing with fire. he leaves a brother and two sisters.
Blanche Fredette, 38, said she thought the doctor was joking when he prescribed staying home and icing her foot after an accident caused by a 50 pound cake of ice that slipped from her hands. In Muscatine, Nichara Wayne Dickey, 2, died in a Muscatine hospital from injuries suffered at home after falling from a wagon loaded with earth.
Waterloo 1949 census reports 160 fewer residents aged 5 to 25 than in 1938. West side gains 164 while east side loses 326. The 1940 west side total stood at 6,039.
Herman West phal, 70, of Palmer, was in critical condition at Lutheran hospital after a fall from a barn roof while shingling. He sustained a spine injury a broken hip and a jaw fracture.
A woman who surrendered to police in Council Bluffs identified herself as Mrs Vernette Gacusana, 33, wife of Dr. Joseph Gacusana of Shardon, Kansas, after learning a sanity hearing was planned. She declined to say how she arrived there and told hospital staff her mother worked at an Omaha hotel and was taken there.
Des Moines reports the interim committee set aside 3000 dollars to print 25,000 additional copies of the state tourist guide Iowa Welcomes You. The initial 15,000 copies sold out and requests continue. The reprint appropriation awaits approval by the state executive council.
A woman found dazed on a lonely road was taken to Broadlawns General Hospital with a skull fracture and other injuries. She gave the name Helen Stewart aged 39 and claimed she was thrown from a car. A brain surgeon was summoned.
Des Moines state representative Dewey Goode obtained a temporary injunction to stop the Iowa Department of Agriculture from canceling his cream buying license. Secretary Mark Thornburg was served with notice as Goode argues the cream grading law is unconstitutional and harms farmers.
Rep Dewey Short of Missouri keynotes Iowa Republican convention and calls for freeing industry from government shackles, cutting taxes, ending government competition with private business, and allowing Americans to raise what they want. He criticizes the New Deal and cites banks and saloons. Delegates elect officers and form committees as Wilson praises Wendell Willkie and McNary.
Cedar Falls July 12 40 Dr M J Nelson dean of Iowa State Teachers College since 1934 was named acting president after the death of Dr O R Latham who had headed the college since 1928. State board of education announced the appointment as members attended Latham’s funeral in Iowa City.

President Roosevelt said at a press conference that he is considering calling out the National Guard for intensive training to stiffen reserve defenses. He plans an immediate discussion with Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson on mobilizing the Guard for training.

BoonEunearthed fire destroyed or heavily damaged several hundred trees in a five acre area at Ledges State Park in Riverside Heights proposed site for a museum and lecture hall. Custodian Carl Fritz Henning identified the losses and noted park crews contained the blaze after hours of effort.
The Red Cross prepares an auction after a band concert next Wednesday to raise funds for civilians in war torn Europe. Organizers expect many contributions, including sacks of feed, seed corn, a Davenport, washing machine, chairs, a chain, a car battery, tables and a saddle. Cash gifts continue to arrive, said county Red Cross chairman Roger Sherman, with more needed.
Sixty tons of hay were destroyed when three stacks burned at the William Chmelar farm southwest of town. Chmelar said the hay, insured with the Washington County Farmers Mutual, resulted in a $240 claim. He noted the barn nearby did not catch as sparks flew, despite a lightning strike and heavy rain. Neighbors and the Farmers Mutual truck aided, with John Custer driving the fire truck to the scene.
A fire at the St. Francis hospital grounds in Cincinnati destroyed a four story building housing 20 aged residents. Five women died and at least seven were injured as flames cut off escape from upper floors. Mrs Julit Waechter urged others to awaken as fire spread from a wooden stairway and ladders were used to rescue occupants.
Indianola youth Kenneth Hodson was fined 100 dollars by Municipal Judge Edwin Moore for reckless driving after a witness said Hodson drove between 60 and 80 mph. His car ran off the highway, struck a school bus tied to a tow truck, then hit a telephone pole. Hodson left the scene and was not arrested for weeks.
The Washington Municipal band plans a July memorial concert marking the first casualty in France from Washington County 22 years ago. VFW and American Legion will station colors at the band stand. Special numbers include Burham and Birney duet, Van Vodichka accordion, Jane Steele and Dick Hotle vocals, Odd Fellows quartet, and Iola Dittmer soprano. Taps and a Soldier's Sililoquy reading by Esther Hayes conclude the program.
Too much speed was the cause of seven truckers being hailed into Justice Fred Miller's court in Carroll. Six of the truckers were from out of state.
A Greyhound bus traveling from Indianapolis to Detroit collided head on with an empty cattle truck near Waterville Ohio. The driver and two passengers died at the scene and nine others were injured. One woman died four hours later in a Toledo hospital and another was reported critically injured.
About thirty five students completed five weeks of summer string instruction led by Margaret Christenson at Lincoln school. The recital drew around 100 parents and friends, with strong praise for the instructor and notable progress from beginners in violin viola cello and bass. Geraldine Harlow accompanied most piano parts, Nan Hoover sang with Bonnie Simpson on piano, and Eleanor Tucker led the beginners ensemble.
A graveside service was conducted today at Elm Grove cemetery for the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Colburn of the Ainsworth community. Born Wednesday night the child lived three hours. Rev Hemphill of the Ainsworth United Presbyterian church led the service. Sherman’s Funeral Home arranged the funeral.

Sources note isolationist Democrats push antiwar planks, with James Byrnes and Harry Hopkins reportedly taking key roles in coordinating a Roosevelt third-term movement from Chicago.
Third in a series of evening park services will be held next day at 7 30 at the band stand. The Presbyterian church leads with Dr F W Eastwood delivering a sermon on Stations and Opportunities.
