City officials announce North Fourth Avenue in Washington will close starting Friday for railroad track repairs and likely stay closed over the weekend. Traffic will detour onto Second Avenue while sewer construction narrows routes, giving drivers a maze like experience at times.
The second of six free immunization clinics for Washington County preschoolers will be next Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Wesley House in Washington. The program, for children aged 2 months to 6 years, shields against diphtheria whooping cough tetanus polio and Rubella measles. Sponsored by the County Medical Society with the County Public Health Nursing Service and the State Department of Health, the clinics run monthly through November.
Iowa Southern Utilities Co did not top Monday’s peak despite heat and humidity. The utility reported a record load of 311000 kilowatts per hour, 7000 above last summer’s high, yet usage fell on Tuesday and Wednesday as plants ran below full capacity. A new peak may be set later this summer, possibly near 30000 kilowatts.
Earl Warren lies in repose in the Supreme Court building as honors flow from past and current justices who served as pallbearers. Burial is set for Friday at Arlington National Cemetery with a separate service at National Cathedral followed by military honors at National Cemetery.

The Washington Community School Board approved a 2,714,000 dollar budget for 1974 75 and set a public hearing for August 14 at 8 30 p m in the senior high library The board reviewed Title 1 funding projections and adopted a tuition schedule for out of town students The meeting covered resignations budget reports transportation costs and notes on bids tires and a potential organ purchase with several staffing and meeting date adjustments noted.
Don Turner heads local YMCA staff as the new executive director started Monday July 9 bringing twelve years of YMCA leadership to Keokuk Fort Madison Mason City and three daughters. He plans to hire a program director and later fill part time positions while housing is sought in Washington. He praised the community and its cooperation as sewer work progresses despite delays near the YMCA building with summer completion anticipated.
Washington County Hospital votes to raise private room rates to 52 dollars and semi private to 48 dollars daily effective August 10 pending federal approval. Administrators cite rising costs, wage hikes, and fewer admissions as drivers of a 64 thousand dollar cost increase and plan for possible adjustments if inflation worsens.
Cedar Rapids Public Safety Commissioner James Steinbeck says he will not resign after being charged with 10 counts in a criminal indictment. He supports Police Chief Wallace LaPeters who suspended five officers without pay as part of a grand jury probe into the department. Also indicted were Assistant Chief Wallace Johnson and Detectives Ken Millsap Donald Rosdail Robert Manchester and Darwin Ammeter. The grand jury accused officers of conspiracy obstruction of justice and perjury amid broader claims of department misconduct from past actions and attempted political influence.
Retiring Evening Journal correspondent Mrs Marian Waters writes of a journalism family history in Crawfordsville Indiana. She recalls uncle W G Manners editor publisher and sisters Aunt Nellie Aunt Mary who carried Crawfordsville Imprint news for years.
