The Chicago Board of Trade saw July corn hit an all time high as the Agriculture Department warned the 1947 crop could fall by 600 million bushels from last year. July corn rose to 2.21 a bushel on the record run, with meat prices also edging higher as corn shortages threaten livestock feed.
The Protec tive Benevolent association sponsored by the Knights of Pythias held its annual meeting in Washington with about 125 members from across the state. The gathering honored Chal Ford of Washington and his memory. Trustees were reelected and officers retained. a dinner and program followed at the YWCA with guests including Mrs. Steve Stewart and Grand Chancellor Harry Scott.
Charles Smith of Broadus Montana died recently in Brighton. Sister in law Mrs Ernest Miller of Washington is noted. Smith spent his youth near Packwood and lived on a farm near Brighton before moving to Montana.
The historic Mount Vernon estate on the Potomac River near Washington was established in 1743 as the home of George Washington, reflecting 18th century colonial architecture and early American leadership.
About 1 15 this morning on highway 22 west of Kalona a car owned by Everette Baker and driven by Clifford Brown wrecked after striking a concrete bridge railing. Injuries included bruises to Brown and Baker and a broken collar bone and bruises for 17 year old Letty Morgan. Vehicle damage estimated at $501 or more.
A government official predicts a long spell of labor management peace through 1948 as wage agreements in coal, soft coal, and flat glass reduce friction. He notes industry settlements occurred without federal aid and expects continued amicable talks, with only railroad and shipyard workforces still unsettled.
Rev T B White of the Presbyterian church will preach at the union service in Central Park Sunday evening. Rev Paul Wells of the Baptist church will preside with prayers from Wells and Park. Scripture read by Rev George Kerr and special music planned.
A teen age dance is planned for this evening at eight in the Legion room city hall as part of the community recreational program. If interest grows dances for young adults may start on Thursday evenings. Mrs Golin Miller heads the committee and a juke box will provide music for dancing.

Eighteen non operating unions seek 20 cent an hour boosts with mediation set after next week’s conference on four dozen rules changes demanded by five operating brotherhoods. About 76,000 CIO shipbuilding workers on the East and Gulf ports back wage increases as the industry’s large strike continues. New contracts in the corrugating and glass sectors would raise take home pay for about 490,000 workers by 159 million dollars annually.
United States and Russia move toward a naked struggle for economic and political control of Europe. The Kremlin pressures eastern Europe to skip the Paris economic conference while Finland is the only state to resist. Russia aims to sway Austria and collapse western plans as Britain and France push the Marshall plan amid a tense, pivotal clash over Europe’s future.
Des Moines July 11 reports Cameron Ross of the department of public instruction that about 90 percent of general state aid may be distributed to approximately 4,000 school districts across all counties. The $8 million appropriation from the 52nd General Assembly will be allocated by pupil counts, 11 cents per elementary student and 14 cents per high school student, with districts required to follow a basic curriculum and fund special courses separately.
Attorneys for the Rock Island and Pacific Railroad appealed to the Supreme Court from a Washington county district court ruling awarding $26,683 to five farm owners. The court had granted $24,683 to Carlton C Wilson Catherine W Smith Edith W Lytle and Maude F Wilson and $2,000 to tenant Fred P Heck after condemnation of 9.84 acres of a 297.86 acre Washington township farm to straighten the line between Ainsworth and Brighton. The owners had sought $39,000 in damages.
Judge R G Yoder in district court granted two divorces this morning. Mercedes Sackett and Wilbert L Sackett receive decrees with both parties free to remarry. Elsie J Van Horne and Hermann Van Horne also obtain a decree, and Elsie regains her maiden name Elsie J Malloy. The judge plans to return to Washington for another court day a week from today July 18.

The legislature appropriated one million dollars for supplemental state aid this year matching the previous year. Aid will be distributed on an equalization basis to districts whose property valuations are too low to meet a minimum education standard. Ross said eligible districts may receive funds around September 1.
Washington will spray fly breeding sites with DDT next Monday through Wednesday July 14 to 16. The Chamber of Commerce contracted Midwest Service of Burlington for 315 to cover downtown alleys and the city dump with two sprayings, with private contracts offered for homes and businesses at various rates.
The Wash ington County Chautauqua association, founded in 1902, plans dissolution in 194% and will hold a July 23 meeting at the Y community room to amend its articles of incorporation. The group has not presented a program since 1931 and efforts to wind up affairs involve remaining funds and former officers.
A car reported stolen from the Emerson Witting farm yard southeast of Crawfordsville was found in a gulley at the back end of a corn field across from the Witting home. It was hidden out of sight, likely placed there as a prank on the owner.
Fred Morse and his son Frank Morse of Humeston escaped a flood by climbing onto their truck after the vehicle was swept from a bridge on the Wapsipineon river near Anamosa. A boat rescued them.
Children day services will be held next Sunday at St Pauls Evangelical Church Washington and Valley Streets at 9 30 in Valley and 11 in Washington. At noon congregations will meet at Sunset Park for a cooperative picnic dinner. Rev Milo Phillipi pastor will leave for Green Lake Wisconsin for a pastor retreat led by Dr B E Stanley Jones and return August 10.
A marriage license was issued today at the courthouse to Maria Matthes of Wellman and Dorothy Graper of Katona confirming their union in the local civil records.
