Mitchell admits helping hush Watergate to aid Nixon reelection
Former Attorney General John N. Mitchell testified that he helped hush up Watergate and withheld details from President Nixon to protect his reelection. He said he believed keeping the lid on until after the election was best, and he did not think Nixon knew of the cover-up. The testimony came as the Senate Watergate committee resumed its inquiry into illegal activities in the 1972 campaign.
