The Ames branch of the American Association of University Women reports 20 placements found for English children during the war in Ames. Six years old was among the ages noted in this wartime housing effort.
J. A. Le Prince, retired United States Public Health Service engineer, is appointed director of the Interstate Malaria Survey. The program targets malaria control across Iowa Wisconsin Missouri Minnesota and neighboring states.
Marilyn Rockwell eight, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hosea Rockwell, died Tuesday after eight months in an iron lung at Broad lawns Contagious hospital. She had a recurrence of a cancer found two years ago and had recovered from chicken pox last December. Hope for recovery was previously expressed.
A baby boy died soon after birth while his two siblings, a boy and a girl, survived and remained in an incubator. They were born Tuesday to Mrs. Joe Hutchson, 34, mother of eight other children. The father works as a day laborer in the city.
At a conference on NYA in school activities Cedar Rapids leaders Walter Shupp Linn county superintendent L N Warren Marion high principal and E L Miller Maquoketa superintendent discussed a girl and a boy who refused to sign the new pledge of allegiance to the United States. The girl left NYA for private work and the boy says he signed the oath in CCC.
Norman Adams, 20, of Mitchellville, served 30 days in Polk county jail for three flag desecration charges. fines totaled 110 dollars for defacement of the flag intoxication and profanity after pleading guilty. Lee Olin Miller, also of Mitchellville, was found guilty and given 60 days in jail plus 3 dollars costs. he pleaded not guilty. Adams allegedly seized a boy’s bicycle flag on July 4, tossed it to the ground and stepped on it.
Davenport report notes Maj. Clement Atlee’s speech was carried by the Columbia Broadcasting Co as a public service feature. William Brandon, head of the WOC operation, explained to District Judge W. W Beatt that the sponsor was identified, following Judge Scott’s inquiry about the broadcast of the English labor leader’s remarks.
Des Moines July 10. Iowa corn is laid by and too tall to cultivate. Federal meteorologist Charles D Reed notes tassels appear in Poweshiek and Marshall counties while more rain is needed statewide. Ground is hard and cracked after dry spell. Monsoon rains offered some relief but overall moisture remains low.
Allendale Missouri reports and Des Moines dispatch say three fugitives wounded a guard at Iowa State Penitentiary and fled in a phantom gray sedan. Police traced car sightings across Iowa and Missouri but found no trail. Investigators note Lowell Heange and Ivan Sullivan, felon fugitives, were in Hamilton Illinois on July 8 seeking to aid another inmate. They carried bolt cutters later discarded over the Fort Madison fence and paid with two dollar Canadian bills at four Hamilton businesses.
The judge cited radio commentator Elmer Davia and approved At tee's statements that urged actions by the United States. The remarks were discussed in court as part of the propaganda debate and judged relevant to the case.
U G Scott Davies of Des Moines lost his bid to be declared the Republican nominee for attorney general. Judge Lou Ladd ruled that Fred Everett was renominated in the June primary and that Everett led after the primary but before the official state vote tally, nullifying Davies’s claim. Davies will seek nomination at the state Republican convention in Des Moines this Friday.
In Munich Adolf Hitler meets with Italian Foreign Minister Ciano, Hungarian Premier Count Teleki, and Hungarian Foreign Minister Czaky amid talks on a new south eastern Europe order. Meantime Britain reports raids continue with several German planes shot down and RAF patrols tracking North Sea bases.
In Oskaloosa Iowa on July 10 a six year old boy Fred Gott of New Sharon died in a hospital from burns he suffered Monday night while he and two companions played with gasoline.
J A True superintendent of Council Bluffs public schools for the past decade told the board he will not seek re election. He offered no reason and the board took no action in session.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam and Deputy Stan Kiesey investigated a report of three men possibly the escaped Fort Madison penitentiary desperadoes seen on road 218 between Crawfordsville and Olds. A trucker told of a curved woods road encounter near a Rath filling station with a Montana license melons-filled truck. officers found no sign of the trio.

At the state convention of the Prohibition party in Des Moines M. Heptsonstall, long time banker in Whittemore Sac City and Perry, now in Bettendorf in real estate and loans, was named for governor. The ticket is complete except for an attorney general candidate.
The day promised hotter weather with the afternoon reading above 95 degrees and approaching the 96 degree mark set earlier in the week. Yesterday and Monday tied as the hottest of the year, while recent days posted 90 degree highs amid high humidity after light rain. Last night’s low settled around 66 degrees.
A program will be given Thursday evening at 8 o clock at Lincoln school by students of the summer instrumental classes taught at the high school by Margaret Christenson. The program features student performances across violin, viola, cello, piano, and vocal pieces, including works by Bach, Beethoven, Grieg, and Ibert, with an advanced and large ensemble.
County Agent J. W. Chandler reports no chinch bugs in two Festicorn corn fields totaling 12 acres. He notes the corn is thriving with tassels forming on six week old plants and that nearby fields show no pest migration. Creosote oil shortages persist but a fresh supply is expected from Olds soon.

President Roosevelt asked Congress for 4.848 billion dollars in cash and authority to add 15 000 planes to the army air corps and 4 000 to the navy to rush mechanization and expand aircraft totals. The plan would lift the army to about 24 591 warcraft by October 1941 and push the navy to 10 000 planes. Senator Lodge proposed a 750 000 man conscripted army as a Burke Wadsworth alternative.
The Red Cross fund auction for relief of destitute Europeans is postponed to next Wednesday after the band concert in Central Park. It will be held at West Main street block near the square, roped off. Chairman W. G. Eldridge cited extreme heat and busy farm season as reasons for the delay. About 25 articles were donated. they will be kept for next week’s sale as solicitors will collect further contributions from Washington residents and nearby farms.
Governor George A. Wilson directed state aid to western Iowa after tornadoes and floods wrecked homes farms and businesses in Portsmouth and surrounding areas. Five state highway patrolmen were assigned to police the damage and Sergeant Everett Martin returned to Des Moines after surveying the scene.
