Head of ABP Charged With Misappropriating Funds During Bankruptcy

A Packers and Stockyards Administration report accuses Frank West of supervising 12 certified checks totaling 1.1 million dollars to close associates on January 2 3 and 7 as American Beef Packers ABP and Beefland International face bankruptcy. ABP listed headquarters Omaha Nebraska with subsidiary in Council Bluffs Iowa. ABP was among the 10 largest packers in 1974 with 896 million dollars in sales. The plant’s bankruptcy caused livestock producers losses across 13 states and substantial seller losses.

DOT to take over Iowa rail branch line projects

Iowa Energy Policy Council votes to move branch line upgrading from EPC to the Department of Transportation by Sept 1, with six projects under way and more in consideration. Tremor Felt Across Sioux City Area and Midwest Towns

Officials confirm a mid morning earthquake tremor centered near South Shore South Dakota touched Sioux City Iowa and reached North Dakota Minnesota and nearby towns. A second minor tremor followed Watertown area reports noting swaying in buildings and minor furniture shift with no injuries reported and only a cracked basement in Wheaton Minnesota.

Riverside breaks ground on $240,000 elderly housing project

Groundbreaking Tuesday afternoon signaled start of construction on a Riverside elderly housing complex valued at 240000. Laura Weimer of the Riverside Elderly Development Corp said 239700 in FHA funds were secured with local seed money and 25 memberships. The 15 unit one story brick and wood buildings on Railroad Street will open in about 200 days with Pat Moore Construction as contractor. The complex targets residents 62 and over and aims to be self-supporting with no rent subsidies. Mayor Ralph Schnoebelen noted this as a first milestone from a community needs survey, with more projects planned including downtown restoration.
