Oil workers and station attendants in Chicago reach a wage settlement ending a gasoline strike that had closed about 1,600 filling stations across four counties. Tank wagon drivers gain $7.50 monthly, attendants $5, while a week’s vacation is denied to drivers. Gasoline supplies were dwindling as unions agreed to return to work.
A rain Wednesday evening aids crops and gardens. July Fourth turnout in Mt Pleasant noted. Henry Ballard and relatives visit Wesley Hollingsworth ill at Rubio. Ladies Aid met at Rev Harvey Moon’s. Everette Jones and Martha Sasseen visiting family near Richland. Faye Kyle stayed with sister near Veo. Ed Kyle family with Grandma Kyle near Germanville. Floyd Singleton relocates Button factory to old town. Zonia Humphrey spent Fourth with relatives. Marian Ballard visited Everette McIigans in Fairfield for band concert. Will Bristow’s mother Ella Eck visited Thursday.
The reorganized Louisa County bank, closed June 10, resumes Monday with officers R S Johnston president J I D Buser vice president W C Hall cashier Everett Henson and Frank Spaethe assistants. Depositors will be paid in full. The Junction bank reopened today per examiner in charge.
Agent J. C. McKay and Raymond Bambrick hosted Burlington railway officials led by General Supt W. A. Card in Washington for a casual inspection of property aboard engine No 475. The group planned to meet Howard Elliott and other directors but headed back toward Burlington via the main line toward Omaha.

A Peking dispatch says about a thousand American troops are ordered to Tsingtao along with French and Italian forces. Japanese forces reach Tsinanfu to secure rail links while rebel generals surrender. Admiral Williams reports no American landings and notes railway service resuming from Tsingtao to Tsinan.

Washington dispatch reports a spike in aviation interest after the transatlantic flights. Clarence M. Young of Des Moines is named director of the new aeronautics division, supervising the branch and serving as first assistant to MacCracken. The commerce department now has about 2100 pilot license applications, 2000 mechanic license applications, and 1500 aircraft inspection and registration applications.
Weather outlook for July 11 to July 16 shows occasional precipitation across the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys and the northern and central Great Plains. Temperatures vary but stay mostly normal or above within this period.
Brief discussions among three delegations failed to agree on cruisers at Geneva the plan to curb auxiliary tonnage was supported by the United States but Britain offered no concessions. The executive committee set Monday for plenary statements as negotiations continue in Washington and London to break the disarmament deadlock.

Ainsworth area residents and guests enjoyed the Fourth of July with visits from Ka lona and Washington notables. Clara Wallace and Betty Schroeder connected with Des Moines and Milwaukee relatives while neighbors hosted gatherings at the Davis, Fitzgerald, and Hazen homes. Local hog shipments to Chicago and haying weather rounds out a busy holiday with numerous out of town visitors and social events.
In Saxony waters from a cloudburst swept through the Mueglitz and Gotleuba valleys today killing about 100 people. Villages including Glasshuette were isolated as floods swept away bridges and buildings. Rescue teams operated while figures from Dohna Weenzenstein Neuendorf Berggiesshuebel and others tallied the dead.
London watchmakers report that strong hand clapping affects wristwatch mechanisms. The announcement caused a sharp drop in theater and music hall applause, leaving actors puzzled as audiences laughed uproariously despite the reduced clapping.
