Three die in Iowa car train crash near Aplington
In Butler County near Aplington a mother Lorraine Sessler 44 and her daughter Linda 14 from Aplington plus Terri Duffield 11 of Greene were killed when a Illinois Central Freight train struck their car and dragged it about 400 yards. The crossing had warning signs but no lights. The train sped 50 to 55 mph. This triple fatality was the third in a 24 hour period, part of 15 traffic deaths statewide.

Large crowds estimated near 3,500 packed West Chester for the Centennial observance with a standing room only audience. Tonight features a barbecue, jazz band, barbershop chorus, and an adult dance, with Sunday’s events including a church service, basket lunch, and a 1:30 p.m. Demolition Derby.
