Lewis Signs Contract Ending Mine Wage Strike
John L. Lewis formally signed a new wage contract with northern and midwestern operators sending about 195,000 of the nation's 400,000 bituminous miners back to work after a 10 day shutdown. The pact raises the daily wage to 15.05 dollars, boosts pay by 1.20, and ends the no work rule for the regions covered. Southern and western pits remain on strike while others are expected to sign soon. The ceremony in Lewis' office marked a major UMW victory as orders to return to the 4 p.m. shift were issued.

Iowa Corn Crop Improvement Buoyed by Warm Weather
Iowa’s weekly crop bulletin reports a noticeable improvement in the corn crop due to favorable growing conditions over the past week. Nearly all corn acreage received one or more cultivations, with rapid growth on well-drained soil, though only about 1 percent had been rained by July 4 versus 57 percent last year, and the crop remains about two weeks late. Farmland weather remained near normal, with soybeans largely planted by July 5, some corn likely replanted to beans next week, and oats advancing with early southern yields promising a normal harvest.
