A coast guard PBY amphibian airlifted sever injured seamen from the burning Edgewater off Point Sable near Ludington. Three crewmen in serious condition were taken to a marine hospital in Chicago after the fire was brought under control. The Edgewater, owned by Cleveland Tankers, carried 34 000 barrels from Lemont to Bay City when the blaze started in the stern.
