In Muscatine two year old Donald Stalkfleet son of Mr and Mrs Frank Stalkfleet died at home from consuming a kind of fireworks called devil chasers according to physicians. The column notes Iowa life and local tragedy.
Betty Johnston 33, daughter of Mr and Mrs Gail Johnston, played in a haymow with matches and firecrackers when fire spread. Her sister Lucille, 10, entered to seek help and pushed Betty out before leaping to safety as flames gained headway.
Mrs. Lee Roscoe, 50, of Farragut, wife of a farmer, died from burns after a washing machine gasoline engine exploded as she poured gasoline while her husband cranked the motor in Shenandoah.
Mrs. Geo Havens heard a crash as a 25 caliber bullet pierced the kitchen wall then the dining room. The bullet smashed through the frame building, entered the kitchen, across the room and into a bedroom wall, finally dropping into a pair of trousers.
Davenport men let their facial hair flourish as the centennial celebration nears. A prize awaits the man with the largest beard by July 13, proclaimed patriotic facial hair as part of the 100th anniversary observance by Mayor Merle F Weiss.
The University of Dubuque appoints Edward A. Wight as dean of the college of liberal arts and college registrar. He succeeds Dr. L. B. Mull who has led the college since 1927.
Tipton construction on the new federal post office is set to begin soon. The one story building will cost about $67,000 and include a main lobby a postmaster's office a vault and a large central work room with a mailing vestibule. The basement will house a recreational room for employees a post office inspector's office fuel and boiler rooms and general storage.
Davenport Iowa Miss Harriet Rowles resigns after 32 years at the Iowa Soldiers Orphans Home. The Iowa state board of control is expected to name a successor. Rowles retired Friday after a two weeks Colorado vacation and will move to Dayton Ohio for her future home.
Dentists from 62 northern Iowa towns are invited to the North Central Iowa Dental Association golf tournament in Cherokee on July 11. Dr. Forrest Barner of Cherokee presides over the group including doctors from Cherokee Palo Alto Humboldt Webster Poeshontas Calhoun and Buena Vista counties.
In Shenandoah three young boys who trapped a large bald eagle last week chose not to shoot it. State conservation officer I F Kiner noted that killing a bald eagle could bring a three year prison term or a five thousand dollar fine. The bird was grounded by a wing injury.
Washington July 7. President Green of the AFL and Joan C. Lewis head of the United Mine Workers remain at odds as Lewis says neither he nor any UMW representative will appear before the AFL executive council to answer Green’s summons. The stance of eleven other unions called before Green is not disclosed.
Officials arranged trucking water to homes in Ottumwa where private wells have gone dry. The move aims to supply residents until normal water service is restored.
Dale Miller aged 26 began serving a 10 month term in the county jail for stealing and abandoning a car in Hampton Iowa on July 7.
David Er Nast, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Rigenhagen, died at 4 30 this morning at the parents home. Born June 16 1936 at Washington County Hospital he is survived by his parents one sister Appie May and two brothers Junior and Harold Funeral services set for Wednesday at 1 pm at the Friends church Rubio with Rev Orville Dillon. Burial in Richland cemetery.
Clarence Logan will take a two week vacation from his job at the Klein clothing store. He plans to visit West Union with Mrs Logan and the children to stay with her parents and Cedar Rapids to visit relatives.
Washington railway workers note a Moscow division realignment as the Missouri portion joins the Illinois division. Homer Fairman is named trainmaster for the adjusted section and may relocate to Washington. Plans for faster streamliner service include the Golden State Limited with track and roadbed upgrades to improve speed and safety.
Dean W. J. Teeters of the University of Iowa will conduct the autopsy on Henry Iwers 7h whose body is being exhumed near Tipton for possible poisoning. In a letter to the attorney general he named nine physicians and asked one to assist.
The Farmers Holiday Association wired President Roosevelt and Secretary Wallace, urging immediate abandonment of the crop reduction program. They cite a historic drought and call for measures to aid producers and consumers by encouraging full crop production and using farms as storage facilities.
Clinton report that W. S. Jacobsen, son of the late Representative B. M. Jacobsen, announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to fill the seat left vacant by his father's death.
Campaign expense figures filed with the county show the Republican nomination race for county attorney drew the highest spending. Richard Stewart won by about 100 votes over Theodore Bailey. Stewart spent $94.75, Bailey $187.58, and L. J. Kehoe $125.79. Other listed Republican costs include Noonan 19.31, Brown 14.39, Wilson 15.94, Morrow 49.30, Timmins 1410, and assorted incumbents with modest sums. Democratic unopposed candidates spent only small amounts.
A billfold bearing the name A. J Riley was found beneath a sidewalk grate near Sherman Bros drug store. It was empty. Riley said the pocket holdup last Saturday contained ninety dollars before the thief removed the bills and discarded the billfold to avoid evidence.
Firemen battled a possible major blaze at the Standard Oil bulk station west of the Rock Island station last night. This morning a small outbuilding at the Knauss residence on East Third street caught fire and was extinguished.
Iowa Governor Herring announced a drought relief push to process drouth cattle for the state. Plants previously operated in Albia Harlan Marshalltown Pella Iowa City and Webster City would be used, with bids due Thursday and contracts let by July 16.
A police dragnet stretched across three states today for Fred Newman and Frank Edwards two inmates who fled the Iowa State Penitentiary at Fort Madison. Officials said the men escaped recently and authorities pursued them through multiple jurisdictions.

Iowa City contractors advance road work on Washington streets with crush rock and bituminous top coat planned. Three more miles of surfacing expected this year, duplicating last year’s program. East Jefferson and West Jefferson streets to be paved early with top coat pending. City Council met, budget estimate adopted, and talks touched on rebuilding the South Iowa avenue to Elm Grove cemetery road.
Washington observed a July 4 with extensive ice cream sales totaling about 1 050 gallons and heavy soda fountain traffic. Root beer and beer sales were high, while city water use reached 450 000 gallons, double the normal daily rate as crowds lined up at fountains and stores. The celebration wore down park grounds and fountains, with cleanup starting in Central Park after the parade.

Wheat futures rose sharply on the Chicago board of trade with July wheat at 1.10 3/8 and December at 1.11 7/8, corn advancing to the four cent limit and oats to the three cent limit amid continued western drought concerns.
