A tent village sprung up outside six blocks of smoldering ruins as a $750000 fire raged Saturday. National Guardsmen patrolled Remsen while thousands visited to see the nickel fireworks blast damage. About one hundred residents were left homeless until camps’ tents arrived from Camp Dodge, most saving only the clothes on their backs.
Herry Rolfe a farmer in Shenandoah sustained severe knee injuries when a skyrocket at a rural Fourth of July display exploded into a crowd. He shielded his children from the blast. The accident occurred during Independence Day celebrations at the midway.
Guy Chivens a 44 year old express company worker weighing 486 pounds died at his Black Hawk county home from dropsy and heart trouble. He was a depot clerk in Waterloo for 29 years and formerly worked in Oelwein.
Charles Carlin, a farmer living nearby, told Davenport police he was strong-armed by three Black men in the downtown business district. Two restrained him while a third took $6 from his pockets and the trio fled in a nearby parked car.
Firemen held children who set off firecrackers responsible for a blaze that destroyed the August Bendixen family home. The small one story structure was in flames when the fire fighting equipment arrived.

A blaze at Jake Koolbeck's Archer coal shed in Primghar caused about $2,000 damage. The fire destroyed 150 tons of coal, some hay, and 5,000 pounds of twine. Ed Huddleston, 45, was arrested for investigation by Sheriff Leemkuill. two 14 year old boys reported seeing him near the shed as the fire began.
Harlan naturalists report two turkey buzzards captured in town during a period of severe storms. The birds, said to fly backwards to shield their eyes, are on display for locals to view.
Carmella Caballaro aged 15 suffered the loss of four fingers when her right hand became caught in a meat grinder before the machine could be stopped in Council Bluffs.
In a Sunbury area farm home the three Bachelor brothers lived for 65 years. Upon Henry Iwers death a search found about 350000 in heirs dispute as Henry Voss and his wife named as heirs. An old 1911 car hid an iron box with much wealth, with more thought to be hidden, prompting challenges from other relatives.
R. Watson, proprietor of the South End grocery, farmed near Burlington before entering the grocery trade. This marks his fifteenth year as a merchant.

She was a 1926 Washington High School graduate, married May 5 1927, and survived by husband, her parents, and daughter Martha. A son Keith and sister Virs Mitchel Sproule preceded her.
City Marshal Blaine Holmes reported few intoxicated arrests during the Fourth of July crowd. Extra officers patrolled the streets, some violators jailed or sent home, with little disorder overall. Traffic flowed with only minor vehicle damage and one show closed for the night.

In Centerville Virginia Miss Whitsell, 22, was hospitalized with a shattered leg after a shooting that occurred while she and others watched fireworks. Four shots were fired from behind a garage, and a bullet struck her leg as the group fled to their car.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam closed a concession he deemed a flagrant gambling device. City police, numbering over thirty extra officers that week and Saturday, manned roped-off traffic controls around the square, permitting limited vehicle passage only for special reasons.
In Tipton a murder mystery surrounds the Henry Iwers estate after his May 30 death. An autopsy is ordered by the county to test for poisoning with analysis by Iowa State chemist Dean Wilber Tee ters. Des Moines reports continuing extreme heat with temperatures far above normal. The Weather Bureau forecasts mostly fair skies and continued warmth through Tuesday, with no rain expected for several days. LeMars reached 117 degrees on Saturday, nearing the 1934 state record of 118 at Keokuk.
Early Saturday a thief stole Kenneth White’s car from South Second Avenue near the city hall and wrecked it half a mile east of town. A driver who spoke with the thief after the crash is sought for a description to aid identification. Several other reported thefts on Washington streets were later found to be false. No serious injuries or wrecks were reported over the holiday.
The Y pool is being drained for cleaning and no swimming classes will be held today or Tuesday. Regular classes resume Wednesday and swimming is not available until then.
Morrison returned to his Newton residence yesterday afternoon after a several week visit with his son Leland and family.
Mrs. Margaret Barr of Wayland injured back and arm while climbing a chair on her porch to tie a flag. She will receive X rays today to assess the injury. A few minor burns from firecrackers and heat prostrations were reported. no serious cases or names recorded.
