A weekend of fatal crashes and injuries across Iowa left eight people dead. Small Girl Freed From Water Pipe Rescue After Foot Trap
A two year old girl fell into a three inch water pipe near a Bar Clay grocery when her foot slid through a cap removed by Fourth of July celebrants. Passers by could not free her until a block of concrete was removed and cast iron pipe split with sledges and chisels. The child’s foot was wedged to the knee but no serious injury occurred after about a half hour of anxious, crowd aided efforts.

H W Helmick of Brighton dies at home Sunday afternoon at four o'clock after months of declining health following a January operation. Survived by widow, four children, one brother and two sisters. Born in DeKalb County, Missouri, he moved to Brighton twenty years ago and started the Brighton Produce Company. He served on the city council and board of education. Funeral Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church, led by Rev. G E Heidel.

Mrs. Fred Radda's Funeral Held Sunday
Funeral services for Mrs. Fred Radda of six miles northwest of Washington, who died Saturday morning at the home of a daughter in Davenport, were held Sunday afternoon at the L. A. Jones funeral home. Rev. C. K. Hautton spoke on A Sojourner Here, but a Resident Yon, with Psalm 39:12. Burial was in the cemetery. Julia Sojka, born in 1870 in Jackson County, married Fred Radda in 1890 and lived in English River then Cedar township. Seven children survive, including Elsie Santell, Anna Hanrahan, Jessie, Muriel, and Clarissa. four sisters also listed.

Start Graveling On County Roads
Work 18 ready to be started soon on the contract of graveling two sections of county roads, Supervisor J Brown said today. Contractors are here today getting the work organized. Last fall the contracts were awarded to the McDougall Construction company of Sioux City but weather delayed start. The contracts cover about three miles on the Washington Riverside road northeast of town and about 3.45 miles of the Wellman to Iowa City road north from Well. Work is underway on the county road south of town toward Wayland, with culverts and equipment in place for a large bridge over Crooked Creek on this road.
